A bedtime favorite!,
This review is from: Stuck in the Mud (Hardcover)
My 3 year old son just loves this book. He wants to read it every night before bed. The rhyming and repetition is perfect for the 2-5 year range and the pictures are entertaining. This is definitely a favorite in our house.

Rhyme and Meter are Horrible,
By Kid Lit Reviewer (Columbus, OH USA) - See all my reviews
This review is from: Stuck in the Mud (Hardcover)
This sounded like a funny story and got a good review from Booklist, which I surprised me when I saw the first verse rhymed "farm" with "calm." The meter is off in the second verse and the third verse doesn't even attempt to rhyme. The poor and/or irregular rhyme and meter continue throughout. The art is great but the text doesn't measure up.

This has definitely become a favorite in our house. My two year old loves the story, but her older cousins (7 and 9) enjoyed it just as much as she did. Great repetition and rhyming with a surprise ending. Makes my toddler laugh every time and enjoys the anticipation of what is to come. Fun illustrations and lots to look at for a little one who doesn't always have time to sit and read - really captures her attention.

Excellent. funny read-aloud for young children,
This review is from: Stuck in the Mud (Hardcover)
I teach young children and they always enjoy this story. A little chick is stuck in the mud, and one by one the farm animals try to get her out. The illustrations are bright, colorful and very funny, and there's a refrain of "(S)he pushed and (s)he pulled" which children can repeat with you as they make the pushing and pulling motions, adding to the fun and the learning. Also, the ending is very cute - it turns out the little chick was never actually stuck at all!

A favorite,
This review is from: Stuck in the Mud (Hardcover)
I probably liked this one just as much as my 3 1/2 year old son did. My 5 month old daughter seemed to enjoy it too. I have even thought about recommending it to his preschool teacher.

Rhyming Fun with Expressive Illustrations.,
This review is from: Stuck in the Mud (Hardcover)
Little chick is stuck in the mud and Hen's in a panic to get him out; instead she finds herself stuck. The cat overhears her distress and comes to their aid to wind-up in the same predicament. Everyone that attempts to get them unstuck finds themselves stuck! Turns out chick has a surprise in store for everyone. This adorable book is a rollicking, rhyming, good time. The illustrations are bold and expressive which successfully conveys Hen's alarm in a humorous way. The opaque colors are nicely shaded to offer just enough detail to elevate this book beyond the toddler set. As a teaching tool, it would be an excellent book to highlight the short "u" sound. Well done.

It has nice pictures and a very cute idea. My son loves this book. He is not even two, and he knows most of it by hart. The pictures are big, and also w/ enough detail to keep a toddler engaged. The verses are long enough to keep him on the page just enough.

FIRR-Kids! Review,
This review is from: Stuck in the Mud (Hardcover)
One little chick rooted in the mud causes a big ruckus at the usually staid farm! The other animals scramble to help, one after the other plunging straight into the muck. Hen, Cat, Dog, Sheep, Horse and even Farmer leap into action as rescue workers. Although each pushes and pulls their hardest, they are no match for this deep and sticky mud.
It's a simple cumulative story, but the rhyming text relieves the book of any monotony. The illustrations are comical - the overwrought hen is positively apoplectic while the little chick remains cool as a cucumber. Particularly humorous is seeing each animal as they strain to free the chick - eyes bulging, muscles straining, fur and fleece splashed with mud. This muck proves to be a worthy opponent. All the factors come together to make this book an entertaining read: rhyming text, great illustrations, crazy mama hen, and eager barnyard helpers. Plus this is an oversized edition with those great big shiny pages, one of which opens wide to reveal ... a surprise ending.

A rhyming book that will have little ones laughing,
This review is from: Stuck in the Mud (Hardcover)
"Stuck in the Mud" is about a mommy hen that tries to 'rescue' her little chick who is stuck in the mud, and ends up getting trapped herself. The other farm animals and even the farmer himself comes to their rescue, but all end up getting stuck in the mud. Of course, things are not as complicated as they seem as is revealed in the surprise foldout towards the end of the book. Little ones will recognize their precocious self in the little chick and the full-color illustrations do a great job of portraying the sticky [pun intended] situation the animals find themselves in. A fun read-aloud picture book with rhyming text.
