Product Description

Josh “Hote” Hotle, twenty-one-year-old bass player, wants to get the hell out of Phoenix.

The time is April of 1990, one year before Seattle’s grunge music scene breaks nationwide, and those with their pop music ears to the ground recognize something big happening in the rainy Northwest. Hote is tuned in to these rumblings, and Seattle poses what might be the perfect solution to his problems: his boring hometown, the catatonic Tempe music scene, the ashes of his recently defunct band, the sweltering Phoenix summer just around the corner. His car is packed with all of his things. He is ready to go. One easy right turn onto the freeway and Hote is a free man.

But a funny thing happens on his way out of town...

In the three days Hote is Stuck Outside of Phoenix, he dates a previously inaccessible love interest, fist-fights his best friend, and plays a dream gig at Tempe’s largest music venue in front of a packed house. Unexpected pleasures and bumps-in-the-road keep Hote volleying from peak to valley, but in the end Hote gets as close as possible to the thing he loves most, the intoxicating pulse and pound of the perfect rock song.

Praise for Stuck Outside of Phoenix

"A nice nostalgia trip for the grunge generation, and a good story for garage band romantics of any age."

-Thomas Bell, Creative Loafing, Atlanta

"[Edwards] conjures up both Hote’s inner and outer world with concrete detail, down-to-earth dialogue, and unsentimentally but sympathetically drawn characters."

-David Tell, Midtown Messenger, Phoenix, AZ

"This is a three-day-plus tale you’ll find both involving and exciting."

-Dan Hays, Salem Statesman-Journal, Salem, OR

"A story highly worth reading--a necessary text as the Gen Xers move to middle age."

-POD Girl, POD-DY MOUTH

5.0 out of 5 stars A sweet, little rock novel, October 9, 2003
By A Customer
This debut novel from Arthur Edwards, former bassist for the band The Refreshments, chronicles the dream of every future/never-to-be rock star: to escape suburbia and go on tour -- preferably in an over-sized, airbrushed bus.

Short but sweet, the pages flip quickly. Will Hote, Mr. Edwards' main character, escape Phoenix for Seattle, the land of his rock dreams? Or will he forever be stuck in the firing kiln of Phoenix, its concrete slabs extending as far as the eye can see?

5.0 out of 5 stars Stuck Outside of Phoenix, November 5, 2003

(REAL NAME)
Arthur Edwards does for music what Tom Clancey does for warfare; he writes an in depth technical novel about the inner workings of Phoenix's musical scene during the early '90's.
The main character, Hote, is the embodiment of the agnst and inner turmoil that was the hallmark of a young Generation X; following him for the three days he is stuck outside of Phoenix is as personal as rereading old journals from the same era. This book is so well-written I could hear Nirvana playing in the background and smell patchouli oil as I turned the pages.

4.0 out of 5 stars Like being there, February 8, 2012
Amazon Verified Purchase(What's this?)
I anxiously awaited this book's delivery, as I was at ASU during the setting of this story. Art does a great job capturing the time period and stirring memories of my old stomping grounds. If you were not there at the time, you may have a difficult time relating the story. If you were there, you will enjoy a walk down memory lane. I will give Art credit for giving really descript picture and sense of being on stage and playing in a band.

It a quick, easy read and fun.
