5.0 out of 5 stars Making it through life's critical transitions!, December 30, 2008
This review is from: Stuck! (Paperback)
Terry Walling has written a very important book for those of us who want to finish well in life and ministry. He has identified three transition times in the life of most people that can "make or break" us. How we work through these transition times will determine to a great degree who we become, how we live our lives, and how well we finish. Terry's insights into the dynamics of transitions provides a helpful "road map" that can give needed perspective so we can "get as much as possible" out of transitions and be better prepared for the next level of challenges in life and ministry.

As a person who works with leaders, I highly recommend this book as a resource for leaders of all ages and roles. The book is written in a practical and useful manner that encourages application for life transformation.

Terry Walling has done an excellent job of outlining the transitions that leaders experience over their lifetime. You will find that his practical explanation of transtions leaves you acutely more aware of your particular leadership journey and equipped with the knowledge that will allow you to gain the most from your transition.

As a Christian executive coach, I work with many corporate leaders who are aware of God's role in their development as leaders. When I recommend this book, leaders inevitably report back that it captures exactly what they are feeling, but more importantly, it explains how they can benefit from the transition they are experiencing.

As a fellow researcher on leadership development and Leadership Emergence Theory, I know that this book is based on solid research and builds effectively on Dr. Robert "Bobby" Clinton's two decades of research on Christian leadership development. Terry has masterfully translated complex research findings into practical advice for leaders, whether they work in ministry or in the commercial marketplace.

4.0 out of 5 stars Good Read, June 14, 2009

This review is from: Stuck! (Paperback)
Stuck! was a timely read. I am stuck. Terry does not expect us to read the whole book, but encourages readers to focus on the spots they feel stuck. He mostly manages to avoid cliches about getting fixed up and back to serving God. He also does not give you a sense that serving God ONLY means being a pastor or working in a Faith Based organization, any one can be stuck no matter what you do. I found it helpful.

Mr. Walling has some real insight when it comes to describing the situations that define transitions in our lives. He certainly described mine! His assessment of the phases involved was helpful, but I found it difficult to know just where I was in his scheme. Perhaps that's a function of my own situation and not a deficiency in the book or in Mr. Walling's understanding. It was definitely worth the read, and I find myself continuing to muse over the themes of the book.
