Eyes stuck on the pages,
By Desmond Chan (Bishan North Singapore) - See all my reviews
This review is from: Stuck on You (Mass Market Paperback)
Former Las Vegas cop Logan Wolfe retreats to idyllic Plentiful, Wyoming after rooting out his corrupt partner. His nascent peace is unfortunately shattered by quirky characters, particularly the red-haired siren and mystery bookstore owner Scarlett O'Malley and her senior patrons Ida and Mildred who are all aspiring sleuths and fanatics over the popular Smythe novels. Patti Berg is a fervent aficionado of mystery too, evident from the small-town mystery and mayhem setting rehashed from the likes of Nancy Drew and Agatha Christie. She throws in a red herring by casting suspicion on the disappearance of the town's richest widow Opal whom Logan is seen to have contact with. Scarlett investigates the death of the lady with initials "E.G" in her bookshop with the assistance of her zealous friends. She soon finds out her stepfather and local sheriff Adam Grant, which she suspects of him silencing her mother years earlier, connected to the lady's death. It is a zippy, fast-paced jaunt with mystery and romance. Logan is the strong, reticent alpha-male who shows infinite patience towards Scarlett's untrusting nature culled from her mother's disastrous marriage. This frustrates the readers and does little for their chemistry. Yet Stuck On You remains engaging with Ms. Berg's whimisical fun and infectious passion in her writing to make a captive of you.

Why did the hero put up with this dingbat?,

Like one other reviewer, I simply could not stand Scarlett. By the middle of the book, I actually felt sorry for Logan, for the fact that he would be stuck with this neurotic crackpot for the rest of his life. Have you ever met a couple where the guy is drop dead gorgeous, super nice and the gal is an absolute witch? And you ask yourself: "This guy could have anyone, so why in hell is he with her?" Well, Logan and Scarlett are going to inspire that reaction in everyone they meet. Obviously Scarlett's nosy paranoia was supposed to be endearing or sympathetic, but I just had no respect for someone who could jump to such ridiculous, hurtful conclusions about people based on so few facts. I didn't blame Logan for being frustrated with her and, like the other reviewer, when he walked out on Scarlett I was actually cheering, and therefore was disappointed when he forgave her less than a page later. To make matters worse, Scarlett doesn't redeem herself by tackling and conquering her trust issues on her own like a mature, introspective adult. Instead, Logan has to solve her problems for her, by painstakingly forcing her to actually think (gasp!!) logically for once. I couldn't believe that he had to tell a 29-year-old to actually investigate her assumptions instead of jumping to conclusions. Realistically, Scarlett should have been a complete turn-off for Logan, and the author never convinced me why this wasn't so. Patti Berg certainly isn't the best romance author out there, but this story doesn't meet even her previous standards.

Great Laughs and Characters!!!,

This review is from: Stuck on You (Mass Market Paperback)
Do you remember Charity's cop friend from "Something Wild"? Well, Lucas has left the police force in Las Vegas and has moved to Plentiful Wyoming where he plans to retire and lick his wounds from his past police life. He lives in a cabin way off the beaten track and has Yogi, Boo Boo, and Snagglepuss just to mention a few of the local animal population that hang around him. He loves Elvis and he has a huge problem! He is attracted to a small red haired not to mention the towns favorite but flaky mystery bookstore owner. Scarlett is as bold and as brazen as her name but is a total fruitcake. She owns a mystery bookstore which makes sense due to the fact that she cut her teeth on Nancy Drew and her dead father was a well-known mystery writer. Scarlett and her buddies the "slueths" see a mystery in every action and this leads to some pretty funny situations until an old cranky lady comes into Scarlett's bookstore and dies. To add insult to injury the new hunk in town seems to be someone she can't get out of her mind, and this is a bad things since the "slueths" think that he is either a murder, or out to take the money from the wealthy widows in town. But his kissessss make her toes tingle and makes it hard to breath. This was a fast paced read with great laughs. The characters regardless if they were the furry ones or the humans were great. The mystery of the dead lady figures heavily into the story and is an asset. You don't want to miss Ms. Berg's latest story.
