I've made many different pull up bars, trying to save money. Yet this product is worth every penny. It is easy to install and bomber solid. I'm an avid "CrossFitter" - the bar doesn't budge, even with my most violent kipping pull ups.

At first, the bar was a bit too smooth for my taste. A bit of fine grain sand paper gave it a more secure feel for me.

I highly recommend it to anyone in search of a rock solid pull up bar.

I purchased and installed the small (8 foot ceiling) bar.

Pros: the bar and mounting hardware are very sturdy. Plenty of head clearance when I do pull ups when I installed it in a basement ceiling height that is 7'8". Works well with TRX suspension trainer. This blows away a door mounted bar except it is slippery; need to rough up the paint.

Cons: this bar's brackets has two mounting holes to mount at 10 inches or 14 inches. The hole on one bracket was ovaled/pushed in. So in effect I could not use that mounting position. I used the 14 inch location. The bar itself was slightly bent. I didn't notice until I mounted everything. Non of this occurred in shipping as the boxes were in perfect shape and the paint was not chipped or stratched. I emailed pictures to Mark at Studbar.com. His only recommendation was to unmount/rebox and send back to Amazon, since that is who I bought it from. I had thrown away the boxes the night before when I unpacked it. After spending a lot of time drilling and mounting, I was not about to undo everything only to wait another week and a half for a new bar. Also, Prime 2-day shipping apparently does not apply. It took 4 days to get to my address.

For $140 I would expect better quality control and for Mark at Studbar to send new replacement bar. That way I could use the boxes for sending back and avoid downtime. He is the owner and should make it right no matter where it came from.

Recommendations: Don't throw away anything. Check over the mounting brackets and their holes first thing. Roll the bar on something flat like a kitchen counter to make sure it is not bent. Leave both mounting brackets a little loose from the ceiling until you have the bar fitted and bolts started in the brackets. I probably had more trouble with this since my bar was not perfectly straight.

This bar is well made and well thought out. Installation is not quick in a finished room, because it is important to center the brackets on your ceiling joists for maximum stability. I recommend cutting the drywall in the ceiling (if you are handy or not worried about over all appearance) to mount the brackets directly to the joists. It would be a snap to install in an unfinished room. Once it is properly installed, it is sturdy and solid. It gives you confidence during your workouts. The 600 lbs capacity may be a stretch, but I can tell you that at 260 lbs, it was not even phased.

Overall, it may be a bit expensive, but it gives you gym quality and should last you a lifetime.

Previously I had one of those pull up bars that slip over the door frame and use leverage to stay in place. That sort of thing is nice if you do not have anywhere to permanently mount a pull up bar. However, the difference in using one of those and using the Stud Bar is like night and day.

First, I only weigh 150 lbs, but the door mounted bar damaged the trim around the door. This made my wife rather unhappy. Second, the door-mounted bars feel secure, but the creaks and groans and the slightly perceptible flex in the metal are disconcerting. Third, the door mounted bar is very close to the door frame, and is relatively narrow. This is a significant problem due to the lack of space to do a variety of exercises.

The Stud bar offers many advantages. I have mine mounted on the wall, above the door in my utility room. It is out of the way yet easily accessible. This thing is ROCK SOLID, even mounted on the wall. No noise, no movement, even when swinging on the bar. Also, it is very wide and sticks out 2 feet (adjustable) from the wall, so there is plenty of room all around. I also use the bar as a solid mounting point for exercise straps when doing my rotator cuff exercises. This is one of my favorite pieces of exercise equipment. (Get it for P90x!)

It installed very easily on the wall, into the studs. My only complaint is that it was made in a foreign land instead of here in the US. I would have paid more for a US-built bar.

I am thrilled with this product! After using a cheap over the door bar successfully for 2 years, not only did I want more options, but I moved to a home with thicker door frames and couldn't use that bar anymore. The Stud Bar looked best for what I wanted to do, which was to mount it permanently to my garage ceiling. In the attic I made sure the joists were 16" apart and not some other non-standard width, and they were, so I purchased it with great excitement.

The product arrived quickly and I was surprised by how large the brackets were and how heavy the bar is. I expected a hollow tube but it feels instead like a solid rod and that inspired confidence. I have no concerns about the durability of this product. I'm pretty quick with my tools and had it mounted in about 10-15 minutes. I simply drilled a pilot hole into the center of the joist and then used a socket in my drill motor to screw in the bolt. Don't tighten them fully at first, leave plenty of slack so you can insert the bar, and then tighten everything up. The bar does not just sit in the brackets but it bolts in as well, so the whole thing becomes one solid unit.

The device is perfect and does not budge or make any noise at all with my 190 pounds on it. The 48" width lets me change to a very wide grip or do walking type of chin/pull ups where I move across the bar as I go. I also bought gym rings and straps from Amazon.com and hung those from the bar. It is wide enough that I slide the ring straps to the end when I'm doing pull ups and still have plenty of space to not worry with getting tangled in them as I'm on the bar, so I never take them down and that saves me a lot of time. I have loved adding variety in this way which was not possible with the over the door bar I used before.

If you are a bodyweight fan and are ready to do more than your cheap bar would allow, this is definitely the next step and it can be so much more than just a pull up bar.
