Editorial Reviews

From Booklist

Most guides directed at student athletes limit their audience to those with athletic scholarships. Abramson, a former Princeton athlete, wisely aims his overview at all student athletes. She suggests that participation in sports can make the transition to college life much easier because the student places him-or herself in an established structure, has a ready-made group of peers (teammates), and will profit from experienced individuals monitoring academic performance. She also covers such familiar territory as choosing a school (look at more than just the athletic program) and marketing oneself as an athlete in an effort to obtain a scholarship. NCAA, NAIA, and NJCAA eligibility rules are covered, and tips are offered on interviewing with coaches and preparing for the entrance exams. A particularly timely section addresses the recent court case challenging SAT and ACT scores as entrance requirements because they are culturally biased against African Americans. This is an excellent guide that will prove invaluable to any student even remotely considering collegiate athletic participation. Wes Lukowsky

2.0 out of 5 stars Dated material, unfortunately, September 9, 2003

This review is from: Student Athlete's Guide to College (Princeton Review Series) (Paperback)
The author has a nice start to the book. But is well behind the curve with many points. Specifically, the marketing ideas advanced were true 5 years ago - but coaches are resistent to these now because too many athletes are using them! Also, the SAT, ACT content is misleading. College coaches screen with this data and other academic data and to pretend otherwise is a real problem. Go with other up to date sources.

This artfully-written work combines clear knowledge of the subject matter with practical advice. In so doing, Abramson provides the college-bound with a much needed roadmap toward preparing themselves for balanced success in academics and athletics. The serious scholar-athlete can't afford not to read this work.

5.0 out of 5 stars A MUST for the high school athlete going to college!, September 12, 1999
By A Customer
This review is from: Student Athlete's Guide to College (Princeton Review Series) (Paperback)
Boys and girls who are in high school and plan to compete in college sports in Division I or II must now begin preparation in the ninth grade. There are strict rules of what the student must do and must not do in high school including a separate application to the NCAA clearing house in addition to the college application. Few parents or students are aware of these rules and many high school and even college coaches are just learning their way through this new maze. This clearly written book is a roadmap and guide for the college atletic maze and it is well organized, full of useful suggestions and will be of benefit to students, parents and coaches. It is practical, direct and even has sample letters to write to coaches. It is filled with useful hints from real college athletes, coaches and former Olympians. It is fun to read! This is one book that will make a difference in your life.
