Editorial Reviews

Amazon.com Review

This Gold Medallion Award-winning Bible is simply gripping because you can get a grip on it. Developed by the bestselling authors Philip Yancey and Tim Stafford, it is filled with easy-to- use features that give clear direction for discovering the riches of the Word. A subject guide, an easy-to-follow three-track reading program (two-week, six-month, and three-year plans), and introductions to each book and its major themes help the new reader chisel a way into the vast story of the Bible. In addition, character profiles introducing you to "100 People You Should Know," and a "Where to Find It" reference section containing 16 pages of full-color maps and a list of important biblical events, help to clarify the context of the stories and their importance to God's overall themes. In-text "Highlights" and "Insights" explain difficult verses, point out essential facts, and encourage reflection. For those seeking, but don't know how to begin, I wish you years of friendship with this faithful book. I know I've had mine. --Courtenay Kehn

From the Publisher

Nearly half of the 1,000 adults randomly surveyed by the Barna Research Group recently say they rarely or never read the Bible. When pressured to explain why they don't regularly read it, most Americans give one of three reasons: I get discouraged, I don't understand it, or I can never find what I'm looking for.

When it was first released in 1986, The Student Bible attempted to meet these reasons head-on. Its two-week, six-month, and two-year reading plans, easily understandable articles appearing within the Bible text, and easy-to-use subject guide made The Student Bible a tool designed to help ordinary people regularly read, understand, and apply the Bible to their own lives.

Three million copies and ten years later, as well as consistent placement on bestseller lists, The Student Bible still seeks to meet the changing needs of today's reader, who wants a Bible that provides more information in less time.

Ergonomic changes like bleed-off tabs to key reference sections and other design modifications are meant to make using The Student Bible, as simple as point-and-click (the editors wanted to include a mouse, but they couldn't find a place on the volume to plug it in).

Popular features of the original Student Bible, such as the 3-track reading plans, are retained and new sections, like 100 people You Should Know, Well-known biblical events, and a glossary of non-biblical people mentioned in the study helps, are added.

The revised and expanded Student Bible is available with Bible text in three translations: the New International Version (NIV), the King James Version (KJV), and the New Revised Standard Version (NRSV).

5.0 out of 5 stars This is the perfect Bible for young adult readers, January 29, 2000
By A Customer
This review is from: The Student Bible (New International Version) (Paperback)
I recently found Christ and was searching for a Bible that would help me to fully understand the word of God. The Student Bible was so good that it was hard to put down. The introductions and subject index were very helpful, and I love the annotations that apply Bible lessons to everyday young Christian lives. Thanks in no small part to this Bible, which I could fully understand, I am now an active member of my church and community and am exploring career options in the missionary field.

5.0 out of 5 stars A++++++++++ Translation, May 18, 2002
This review is from: The Student Bible (New International Version) (Paperback)
I have always had trouble reading the Bible. The language was always difficult, and even though I went to church and understood the stories, I tended to "get lost" when I was reading the book on my own.

...until I got this Bible.

The Student Bible has, by far, been the easiest read of any Bible that I have ever had the pleasure of reading (and owning). 3 different reading tracks can take you through the key points of the Bible quickly, through every book in a semi-long amount of time, or through every word in the massive book. However, while this comes in handy, what I found most useful was the inserts inside the reading. Constantly throughout, notes have been made, explaining traditions, who people are, and other things that people today might find odd or confusing. For example, in Ezekiel, there is a note that helps explain the afterlife, saying,
"Though eternal life shines through a few Old Testament passages (see "Life after Death," page 581), life after death was extremely vague in most of the Old Testament. The grave was represented by a place called, "Sheol." The fate of the nations described here as "within the grave" gives a vivid, eerie sense of death."

These notes, along with advisements at the beginning of each book, help provide additional information and assist in the comprehension of events and ideas. This Bible also has a helpful glossary, a lineup of rulers, a subject guide, and maps that pinpoint places and journeys (among these are the Land of the Twelve Thieves, the Kingdom of David and Solomon, Jerusalem in Jesus' Time, Jesus' Ministry, and much more!) This Bible is awesome! It has been the only version that I have been able to read consistently and understandably! A+++++++++++++++++++

5.0 out of 5 stars A clear, easy way to study the Holy Bible, July 31, 1998
This review is from: The Student Bible (New International Version) (Paperback)
The Student Bible is a must for everyone who wants to learn more about Christianity. It includes both the Old and New Testement, and has excellent noted and annotations to help you understand it better. The 3-track reading program also offers a superb way to cover all books of the bible over weeks, months or years.. it's up to you. Tremendous; I received mine as a gift, but I urge you to buy it.
