Having said that, if I had the decision to make again I would not buy it, even used.

If possible, don't take Calc I if you are going to be made to used the Briggs/Cochran book period.

My calc prof gave us homework from the problems that were not on the solutions manual, lol.

The primary text that this solutions manual accompanies is a nightmare, so my condolences if you are stuck with it. However, the one possible glimmer of hope to be seen through this text are the problem sets. They are often extremely difficult, contain material not covered in the section they accompany, and focus heavily on algebraic reductions that are not demonstrated anywhere but in the solutions manual.

That means that if you want to learn calculus with this text, you won't be reading the book, you will be reading this manual. Seeing the problem worked out is actually a better learning aid than most of the "examples" covered in the primary text.

Unfortunately, in the same way that the primary text is lacks accessibility, the solutions manual is utterly devoid of written explanation. Problems are worked once, as if copied from a homework notebook, and never is another thought given to explaining them. Sometimes steps are skipped, but with enough effort you can figure out what happened. Furthermore, the text itself looks like a publisher's proof copy. It's printed on what feels like very cheap paper and has a featureless cover that a blue-tinted miniaturization of the primary text's cover.

That said, and as miserable a situation as it is, this book is utterly necessary for the text. Unless you feel like spending hours on algebraic minimization (rather than the calculus you're trying to learn), this is the only way to see if your answer is anywhere approaching correct.

Buy it because you must and get what you can out of it.

This solution manual covers Ch 1-11 "Single Variable" of Calculus by Briggs Cochran. I am now looking for Ch 12-15 "Multivariable"

I have just completed the single variable portion of the textbook that goes with this. Certain parts, mostly in Calc 1 chapters I can get away with only a brief solution they give and make due. Certain chapters in the Calc 2 portion however, they skip many steps which I can only assume they think you should know how to do. That becomes troublesome when you are learning it the first time and would like a thorough solution to try and compare to. I had many of times where a tutor in our tutoring center and I sat and had to decipher how and where they got their answers from, although most times they do work out. Some sections though, the writer of this manual does their own style and the resulting answers are different from how we solve it in our class.

Just keep in mind this will not show all steps for problems and they solve it in their own methods. It is a good comparison tool none the less and I am glad I had it to use, especially late at night. It's not the best, but is is something better than just the answer key in the back of the book. I'll probably be purchasing the multivariable version to finish out this book if that tells you anything, so good luck to you! Tip for success with Calc would be to check YouTube for videos on the section you are working on, you can maybe gain some clarity and pair that with solution manual for a good chance at solving problems you are stuck on.

An optional solutions manual is something you'll want to opt for. It shows how to solve the problem, albeit not step by step, it assumes you know what you're doing. Any help is welcomed though so I strongly suggest you get this. It covers only the odd numbered problems, which in theory you could tun to the back of the text for but this manual shows how to get that answer.

I bought this manual because the book only has the solutions to the odd numbered problems. None of the other reviews seem to address this, which makes me wonder if it's common knowledge, but this manual also only has the solutions to the odd problems. The only difference between it and the book is that it shows the work behind the solutions. This is the reason I gave it three stars (it's okay) instead of two; if you are stuck on an odd problem the manual can be useful. Having said that, if I had the decision to make again I would not buy it, even used. I am going to keep it though, because at $15 and it's not worth the hassle of returning.

Good companion to the book, especially if you have the textbook online. Though I wish there were more explanations to how answers were calculated, having the answers as a reference is always helpful.
