Book Description

July 15, 2010 1903765951 978-1903765951
With a successful career as a singing teacher for more than a quarter of a century, author Colin Baldy has been frustrated by the lack of suitable reading materials aimed specifically at the student of the singing voice. Therefore, he has provided a useful resource with The Student Voice. Primarily designed for undergraduate and graduate level students, the book will also benefit mature singers, teachers, and those already in the singing profession who simply want to keep their technique and knowledge alive. The Student Voice includes some physiology, with suggested exercises and methods for developing the correct use of the student's physical instrument. It suggests a suitable repertoire to run alongside the exercises and contains a large amount of trouble-shooting advice. The author's intention is to encourage singing students and to assist them in avoiding common pitfalls. The book will also help singers identify vocal problems which they may already have developed.

Editorial Reviews

Review

'Baldy's writing style is instantly warm; initial impressions of this book are akin to working with a familiar mentor in a lesson or masterclass situation. This approachable writing style enables the reader to absorb the ideas and techniques that Baldy so clearly advocates - Vocal research is an ever increasing and often confusing field. This volume stands out from the wealth of available material for its ease of reading and strong introduction to vocal physiology - ' The Singer 'Colin Baldy has been clear and concise and throughout he speaks directly to the reader and provides examples wherever he can. As an introduction, The Student Voice has some useful information and provocative points for further discussion and research particularly for the enquiring student. The section, Repertoire with Purpose, could be useful to novice teachers and, again, thought provoking for the more experienced.' Newsletter of the British Voice Association

5.0 out of 5 stars Excellent Resource for Singers, June 4, 2011

This review is from: The Student Voice: An Introduction to Developing the Singing Voice (Paperback)
Now I would like to put it out there that I got this from the library, and I am not sure whether I would have purchased it for $35. However, if you have the money to purchase this book, DO SO! The title is misleading, and makes it sound like a basic singing book without much grounding in scientific research and explanations. This is quite the contrary. The author, Colin Baldy, does an excellent job with explaining the concepts necessary to understand to become a better singer.

I believe that Baldy's book would be incredibly useful to any future Music Educator, Voice Teacher, or a singer who wishes to advance his or her skills. Baldy not only explains his opinions on vocal pedagogy, but also provides great diagrams of the vocal mechanism, and helpful vocal exercises to strengthen and refine the voice.

Overall Quality of the Book: 5 Stars!

Content: 5 Stars

Diagrams: 4 Stars

Vocal Exercises: 5 Stars

Value: 3.5 Stars (c'mon Amazon, 35 dollars for a 130 page book is fairly expensive).
