3.0 out of 5 stars Not really a "study abroad" book for Americans, June 11, 2007
This review is from: A Student's Guide (Culture Shock! Practical Guides) (Paperback)
I was looking for a book about life as a study abroad student. However, this book is aimed more towards a student looking to spend their entire university experience abroad rather than just a semester. It gives the type of information that someone who's already in university would already know. It would be wonderful for a senior graduating from an American high school who plan to go to school in Oxford, for example, but not incredibly helpful for an American sophomore college student looking to spend a semester abroad.

It is also worth mentioning that this book is best received by the British as it is written from that perspective. It was somewhat difficult to remember that the U.S. was a foreign country from the author's perspective, which made certain points in the text confusing at times. Also, some of the generalized "Northern Hemisphere information" is incorrect; for example, as an American, I have absolutely no idea what "reading week," apparently during February, is. It sounds like maybe spring break or a dead week?

I also found a lack of detailed editing distracting, as there were multiple punctuation and grammar errors, making the text difficult to read at times.

Overall, I'd recommend this text for someone looking to go to school abroad for several years, but not really for a study abroad student.
