Incredible Help for Marchers Beginning and Experienced,
By
This review is from: The Student's Guide to Marching (Spiral-bound)
I had the privilege of recently working at a band camp with Chris Previc. He told me about the book he wrote and I bought a copy of it from him. The book itself is not only easy to understand, but it has something for everyone. It breaks down every single aspect of marching in a marching band, to such tiny things like where to look at when you watch the drum major! The book is very detailed and the illustrations are great for help and description in the subject they represent. Also, on a side note, Mr.Previc is a very intelligent man. Watching him work with the band I use to be in was incredible. He helped to change them for the better. It just proves to me that Chris definitely knows what he is talking about. I would recommend this to anyone who is in Marching Band or any band program in general.

If you are looking for a book that will help give you a few ideas about marching it's worth checking out. There is some good information in here. The author included a several exercies that could help a student of marching but a few more would have been nice. As a former marching member with a successful drum corps and an active marching band instructor I bought this book looking for a few new ideas. Most of the stuff in here I already had a past experience with, but it may be helpful to a newer instructor or a beginning marching student.

Chris Previc has created one of the most detailed books about the marching band student to date. I consider it my "Dummies Guide for the Marching Band Student".
It is a must for any marcher (marching band or drum and bugle corps). Beginners can learn basic marching terms, skills, and exercises that will easily integrate them into any marching group no matter where they are from. Marching band instructors who are currently teaching or want to teach marching visual should read this to get a fresh look at the activity. They will learn how to better understand the student marcher's perspective and give them an idea on how to teach and clean marching band drill. It's more than just a users' manual, this book will teach you how to teach others in an effective and efficient manner. I reference it often during my teaching jobs. -GM Gregory M.
