5.0 out of 5 stars The Student's Guide to Painting, December 29, 2009
Amazon Verified Purchase(What's this?)
This review is from: The Student's Guide to Painting (Hardcover)
This hard to find book offers beginner and advanced student alike one of the most comprehensive guides to mixing shade and colors as taught by various painting schools up until the impressionist period.
It is of particular value to portrait painters but also of value to still life and landscape painters due to its careful consideration of the use of value patterns as the foundation of good art.
It also contains much valuable information on color mixing and artist's materials. If you missed a traditional art school training, you may find this work a great help in learning some of the basic techniques laid down by the traditionalist masters.

5.0 out of 5 stars Must Read, August 15, 2011
Amazon Verified Purchase(What's this?)
This review is from: The Student's Guide to Painting (Hardcover)
This book is a concise distillation on Frank Reilly's painting methods. The author makes the information very accessible and presents it in a very logical progression. Particularly helpful is chapter 6 "Light and Shade" in which Faragasso gives detailed explanations and graphs on how to scale values to create different lighting effects. It has quickly become one of my favorite books on painting.
