Editorial Reviews

From School Library Journal

Grade 9 Up?Although this guide starts off lacking real zip, it quickly picks up pace. The first chapter contains statistics and other information showing how successfully completing a higher-education program enhances the odds of progressing in the world of work. The importance of being involved in activities outside academics is also emphasized. Relevant examples from Jell's own life help to illustrate many points. In a positive fashion, readers are warned how excessive partying and other unwise time use can lead to academic or disciplinary problems. In clear terms, the book shows that the decisions a person makes in college can affect what happens in years to come. There is a careful explanation of the differences between a job and a career, and how education, ambition, goals, and experience relate to one another. The importance of mastering positive interpersonal skills is stressed, highlighting the value of networking. There are practical interviewing tips and great pointers on being a respected and effective leader. Each chapter ends with a summary of key ideas and terms; self-tests throughout help students measure progress. Well documented and capably written, this guide would be an asset to career-guidance collections.?Diane P. Tuccillo, Mesa Public Library, AZ
