For me, the book worked because our instructors used many of the vignettes and questions on our exam.

However, for the general student of medicine, this book is ridiculous. For example, after presenting a short patient vignette, it asks for a differential. Working with friends, I tried to come up with three reasonable diagnoses given the symptoms. The book would give three, but two of the three would be completely UNreasonable. It would say something like, "Diagnosis #1 relies on findings of A, B, C, and D. However, our patient does not report A, C, or D, so this diagnosis is unlikely."

I didn't find that to be at all helpful.

Additionally, the multiple choice and matching questions are quite easy, probably too easy to be useful for anyone more than a few months into your training, regardless of field (RN, PA, MD, etc...).

All in all, I think this book is a waste of money for most people. Just read the margin notes in Bates, and review the tables at the end of each chapter, and you'll get a much better review than this will provide.

Since I bought this book as an added companion for my Advanced Health Assessment textbook, my grades have improved by approx 10%-12%. If that doesn't speak about the quality and usefulness of this material, I don't know what does!

Teaching graduate nursing students is always a challenge. Case studies are a good way to challenge them. This set of case studies works well when using the Bates textbook.

This book is pretty good for the basics. I feel that it was a good book for the first year of medical school learning to do a complete history and physical.

This guide was extremely helpful in working through differentials I found it to be most helpful and recommend it when taking a physical examination course.

My boss purchased this book because he 2 year medical student was reading it and he found it very useful. He recommended it to me for my daughter who will be starting college in the fall as a pre-med student. She is really enjoying it.
