Voted the February Book of the Month by the Informed Medical Decisions Foundation

"This is a highly valuable starting point for medical students and those in residency training, but the book is also useful for anyone interested in evidence-based medical practice and for policymakers who need a starting point to understand current medical decision-making. ... What makes this book extraordinary are the summaries of the studies followed by the implications for medical practice. This is a most important summarization for every clinician in practice..." 5 Stars --Vincent F Carr, DO, MSA, FACC, FACP (Uniformed Services University of the Health Sciences), Doody's Health Sciences Book Review

This is a breath of fresh air - a concise and easy-to-use summary of some of the most influential research in the history of medicine. Everyone will find this book valuable: lay people who would like to know what their doctors are thinking, medical students trying to orient themselves to medical literature, housestaff who should understand and question what they do, and practicing physicians who want a complete mastery of the evidence base of their profession. I am keeping this book in my office and plan to read and refer to it frequently, as well as use it to teach. I can't wait for the pediatric edition!

Wow! What an awesome book and a great find. I am a third year medical student and spend the majority of my day seeing patients in clinic, rounding in the hospital and designing treatment plans under the supervision of a resident or attending physician. Although I came into third year feeling well prepared from all of the book knowledge I acquired over the first two years in pathology and pharmacology, once you hit the wards you instantly feel overwhelmed and underequiped to deal with the hundreds of decisions even a medical student needs to make every day. Although you might pick up a new, previously undetected carotid bruit in an asymptomatic patient, do you know what the next step is? If you go ahead and order a carotid duplex ultrasound, what are you going to do when it comes back with a 50% occlusion? Consult surgery? Do nothing? These difficult decisions come up all the time and this book, 50 Studies Every Doctor Should Know, gives you the most essential studies that are the foundations for evidence based medicine. It is an absolute certainty that you will see a patient who has a decision that can be supported by one of the studies addressed in this book. If you are able to work in the study into your presentation or treatment for this patient, the resident or attending will be amazed and blown-away. Asides from impressing the senior physicians, this book solidifies my knowledge in a way no review book ever will. Spanning from Internal Medicine to Surgery to Radiology, this book cites the key studies for almost every medical and surgical specialty. Truly an awesome book that I encourage any medical student or new physician to order.

An intro to studies as it relates to medicine but I don't know enough of the latest medical studies in each of the disciplines to rate it accurately. I'm not sure if the content is already outdated or determined false or inconclusive with newer studies.

Having said that, I do recommend this book. I appreciate the book format, but I think we are eventually we are all moving to an online clearing house of only the significant medical studies that directed medical practice that is succinct and updated in real time. This way literally everyone, globally can be on the same page in minutes of reading.
