Book Description

December 15, 1998
Frank Lloyd Wright's Wasmuth folios, one of the most important publications on modern architecture in the 20th century, is available once again from Rizzoli. First published in Germany in 1910, these 100 plates of Wright's early work had enormous influence on the architects of the time and will provide a valuable resource to historians and architects today.

This facsimile edition includes the original selection of presentation and working drawings form the Oak Park period, the years perhaps most crucial to Wright's development. Also faithfully reproduced are the architect's own introduction and his comments on each project. A new foreword discusses the recently discovered historic background of these folios and Wright's intention to proffer them as a primer for a new democratic American architecture.

Editorial Reviews

From Publishers Weekly

A facsimile of the treatise that secured Wright's reputation in Europe, this elegant volume includes plans and drawings of all his projects up to 1910. In the "Prairie houses," vaguely preColumbian forms, adaptations of Japan's light-paneled architecture and intricate wooden moldings are fused into the style Wright termed "organic," even though his buildings of this period seldom made direct references to nature. The monumental Larkin Building and Unity Temple, at once abstract and classical, were experiments in what he called a "democratic" vernacular. In the introductory essay, Wright proclaims his contempt for the recent past and embraces the International Style. Europeans were entranced by his abstraction, yet it is his wayward individualism that shines through in the sketches. Printed on cream stock in sepia inks, the album is for connoisseurs and serious students.

5.0 out of 5 stars Accurate reproduction of the 1910 Wasmuth Portfolio, December 18, 1997
This book is the only complete and accurate reproduction of Wright's 1910 treatise "Ausgefurte Bauten und Entwurfe von Frank LLoyd Wright" (the Wasmuth Portfolio.) Although it is reduced in size, all plates are listed by their original roman numerals with the German text. It is the only useful refernece when researching the wasmuth portfolio. Neither the Dover edition nor the Horizon Press edition reproduced the plates without renumbering them in some fashion. This book is a must for any dealer or collector interested in acquiring the Wasmuth Portfolio.

5.0 out of 5 stars An anthology of genius, April 9, 1999
By A Customer
This review is from: Studies and Executed Buildings by Frank Lloyd Wright: Lloyd Wright, Frank (Hardcover)
Wright printed this book in Germany to show the European architecture world what the future of architecture could be. Though virtually ignored in both Europe and the United States, this collection of both built and unbuilt plans and drawings gives a through insight and understanding of the architect's genius.

5.0 out of 5 stars A Must-have, July 12, 1999
By A Customer
This review is from: Studies and Executed Buildings by Frank Lloyd Wright: Lloyd Wright, Frank (Hardcover)
Yes, this book is a must have. It is also (a reprint of) perhaps the most important publication of Wright's early career. But it certainly has not been virtually ignored. It has been praised by many, including rival architects, and reprinted numerous times before this.
