Book Description

September 5, 2006
UN Studio is the innovative firm founded by Ben van Berkel and Caroline Bos, two Dutch designers creating some of the most ambitious and celebrated architecture of their generation. Fluidity and flexibility are hallmarks of UN Studio projects, and many of these projects have literally reinvented a number of standard building types, such as power stations, museums, bridges, transportation hubs, and live-work residences (including one based on a Möbius strip). UN Studio projects fuse a sophisticated understanding of digital design with a formal and material exploration that has ensured that their work reaches far beyond the "supermodernism" associated with other Dutch firms. This book presents the firm's complete body of work, including several major projects in Germany (Mercedes-Benz Museum, Stuttgart), Italy (Pierodi Pier, Genoa harbor), Switzerland (Hotel Castell, Zuoz), Korea (Galleris Hallin, Seoul) and many in the Netherlands.

This review is from: UN Studio: Design Models - Architecture, Urbanism, Infrastructure (Hardcover)
a very complex technically advanced edition to my library,
but non the less its worth it, a very intellectually acquired design compilation.
(also extremely large and heavy book)

4.0 out of 5 stars UNDOING UNSTUDIO, July 21, 2007
This review is from: UN Studio: Design Models - Architecture, Urbanism, Infrastructure (Hardcover)
When I first opened the book I was extatic to see these full page images of teh spaces that UN had worked on then I looked further in to the book to find the breaker pages were not as I had expected. They used these florescent colours that just didn't do it for me and the text was shadowed!

Besides that the book was overall very good at breaking down the evolution and timeline that UN Studio has created in their modern building designs.

The real "peice du resistance" was the Mercedes building (reason I bought the book). Now I just have to go see as many of their building as possible!

Ben Van Berkal and Caroline Bos has come a long way.

I felt I could relate as I have gone Graphic Designer to Architect!

Good readings!

I am disappointed in this book. while there are a lot of glossy pictures there are no technical drawings and/or diagrams and sketches. These are the fundamentals of architecture, and I for one would love to see UN Studios process.
