As a writer, I always have a number of books and magazine articles in various stages of preparation. Those pending publications represent years and years of future income, so I can't afford to lose those files. While the MAC version of My Book Studio is more expensive than the plastic-cased My Book of the same capacity, its aluminum case dissipates heat more efficiently, and keeping the drive cooler should improve the reliability and lifespan of the drive. Moreover, the aluminum-cased drive has a longer warranty. A few bucks extra isn't much to pay for better security. I use one drive for Time Machine backups, and additional drives for manual backups using PROSOFT Data Backup software, rotating these extra drives on a schedule so that a recent backup is in a bank vault, another backup is in a fireproof vault at home, and a third is in my office. I also back up to a cloud service. When a decade's worth of pending income is on my computer, not to mention a treasure trove of family photos, a secure and redundant backup system is essential. The BIG TRUTH here is that anything worth backing up is worth backing up at least twice. I have learned this the hard way. Moreover, those backups should be made on the highest quality drives one can find. That's the My Book Studio for MAC. If you use a PC rather than MAC, it's easy to reformat this drive for your PC.

I know a lot of people nowadays are creating their own drives using a bare HD and buying a case, but after checking prices, it was actually more cost-effective for me to go with this HD external drive. 4TB for just over $200? You really can't beat that. It would've cost me $190 to buy a WD Red 4TB drive, and then another $50 for a decent looking Macally case.

This drive is quick and fairly quiet. The only minor annoyance is the LED on the front of the case. It would be nice if there was an option to turn it off when the drive is in sleep mode. At night, when the drive is in sleep mode, the light is like a beacon, and is just way too bright.

This issue has been commented on by others. The drive enters an energy saving sleep mode and unmounts from the computer, prompting an error from OSX regarding the need to properly eject a disk first before unmounting.
Unfortunately, I didn't see those reviews until after I started using this drive with my new 2013 model year Mac running Maveriks. From what I've read online, there's apparently no clear understanding why it occurs, much less a reliable solution.

Certainly WD My Book Studio USB3.0 4TB desktop storage drive has met my required need. Storage size has met my expectation, price is within reach, brand is reputable, look is perfect which complement my Macbook Air, USB 3.0 connection is flexible for both Mac and Window PC. And lastly Time machine function is recognised and working well.

My drive lasted almost a year before malfunctioning (I bought this drive on August 23, 2013 -- as of this writing it is August 2, 2014). I used it for Time Machine backups. After the experiences I'd had with Western Digital's external HD interfaces in the past, I was buying Seagate's drives before they started having the same issues. I went back to WD and settled on this model because of the reviews, which were far better than with the old units. When it worked, the drive was extremely reliable. But now, even though it is still connected and I can copy contents off of it, the drive cannot write. I reformatted it, hoping that would work, but like all the previous WD external drives in the past, it failed.

I just would like to find a maker of external powered desktop drives where the drive does not fail after a couple years. Seagate's are average at best and Western Digital's so far have practically a zero rating in terms of longevity. Both these makers make excellent internal drives. Do they put their rejects in their enclosures? I don't know. The number of good external enclosures for custom building are also not that good. Acomdata used to make a great enclosure, but they're gone now.

Just what is an owner of an iMac or Mac/PC laptops supposed to do for large external storage options? I don't know the answer for that question either.

top rate, no problems at all and it does what I bought it to do backup as my time machine. The sleek metal case matches my mac and accessories perfectly.

Simple and reliable. My Book install involved connecting it to power and the USB between the My Book and my computer. Set up via Time Machine took about two minutes and it is running quietly ever more. It is the perfect choice.

I'm so happy I bought it, my mac was crying for disk space and this is the perfect solution for it. I save all my documents, videos, ebook, photos on my external drive really quick.. The silver color combines perfect with my mac book pro... I added a mac sticker on a side an looks like a mac product.. Not noisy, really fast, amazing looks! And the best part is the price...

After a solid week of emailing back and forth with Western Digital support "experts", multiple reformats of the drive and a firmware update I'm still not able to use this drive. It's been a real displeasure owning this - it randomly ejects itself, cannot be verified in Disk Utility, and fails at Time Machine backups. One other note - the feet are "secured" with a thin strip of double sided tape. I realize it's meant to be a desktop drive, but those things are falling off the first time you put in a bag.

In all likelihood this is just a defective unit, but I've owned several hard drives before from other manufacturers and never experienced anything quite so frustrating, computer hardware-wise.

This device worked just as stated in promotional literature. It complements the appearance of the new iMac without taking up much desk space.
