All I knew was that I wanted to be a animator. This book helped me understand the basics (where what was and what it did) it doesn't go into incredible detail but does teach you how to acheive an effect. I would not recommend this book to someone who knows what lofting, mesh warps, nurbs, uvw mapping, or kinetics are. If what I just wrote to you is like greek buy this book if you can say sure thats easy avoid this one.

This book is exactely what it says. This was my first book for max and I can say it teaches the fundamentals. So if you are an experianced user this is probably not for you. However, I have only been working with max for three months and this book shot me up into a new level of capabilities. GREAT FIRST BOOK

Outdated book. It was a 4 stars book back in 1996's.
That's only a fundamentals book, as the title says, and it does it well.

I didn't know much about 3D Studio Max, but I did know a lot about graphics. I found the first tutorial pretty helpful, but from there I thought it was kind of boring.
