Biography

Psychedelic folk-rock band Love were formed by enigmatic singer-songwriter, multi-instrumentalist and producer Arthur Lee when he was just 20 years old. Lee is also known for producing a young Jimi Hendrix in his early career, and tipping off his label bosses about his friend Jim Morrison's new band, The Doors. The other members were Bryan MacLean (singer-songwriter, guitar), Johnny Echols… Read more in Amazon's Love Store

4.0 out of 5 stars gather round, March 7, 2002
This review is from: Studio/Live (Audio CD)
this features some of the better cuts from OUT HERE, a late 1969 love album, along with 4 live tracks. the best live song is probably the version of stand out, but the highlight may very well be product of the times, a rather funky number not available anywhere else-it's only on studio/live. perhaps the best song from the studio side of this album is gather 'round , presented here in a slightly abbreviated version. while this material is good, it is really for completists only. and the studio tracks can be heard in their entirety on OUT HERE. this isn't necessarily a good thing, as one song, doggone, is actually better in its edited form-a long and lugubrious drum solo has been edited out, this certainly improves the song, which is a nice melodious ditty.

4.0 out of 5 stars A more streamlined version of Out Here... with some extras!, April 15, 2005
This review is from: Studio Live (Audio CD)
In my review of Four Sail, I said that Out Here would be a good companion to that album. Now that I think of it, Studio/Live might be a better choice. It edits the cumbersome double-album Out Here down to a more listenable form, and by adding the live tracks, actually creates a very solid recording. The live version here of "Stand Out" is the best I've heard and this may be the only place to find the excellent "Product of the Times" -- unless you want to hunt down the hard-to-find, unreleased Arthur Lee solo album Black Beauty. The songs "Doggone" and "Love is More Than Words" sound particularly better in their edited down forms (minus overlong drum and guitar solos, respectively). It might have been better had the short song "Abalone" been included here, but that's a minor quibble. I highly recommend this CD to any fan of Arthur Lee and Love.

4.0 out of 5 stars Out Here. Edited Plus!!, January 22, 2010
This review is from: Studio Live (Audio CD)
This Love this release is a bit unusual. The eight studio-tracks are all from the 1969 double album "Out Here" while the origin of the four live tracks is not time indicated.

The studio numbers are selected among the best on "Out Here", though I feel it would have been even better if the song "Abalony" also had been included. . Two very long tracks from "Out Here" have edited down to more normal playing time, which is definitely a win for both songs. Especially "Doggone", which is a one of the strongest tracks, has won a lot with the long drum solo being removed.

"Out Here" is in itself a great album, even if only it in glimpses recalls the sound of the earliest albums from the group. This is not surprising as only Arthur Lee is back from the original lineup.

Other tracks from the album which also stand out are "Willow Willow," "Listen to My Song" and "Gather Round".

The live numbers are solid - but it is a little annoying that there is no information about origin and line-up.
