The authors help you create convincing lighting effects and build realistic industrial and animated materials, such as dirt and metal. You also learn how to create optical effects and work with the Dynamics utility. Additional sections of the book teach more advanced modeling techniques, including those involving lightning, bones, landscapes, and Non-Uniform Rational B-Spline (NURBS) modeling; Space Warps and particle systems; and plug-ins. A section dedicated to technical material covers expressions and MAXScript.
Appendices list resources for more information on 3D Studio MAX, special effects, and filmmaking. A full-color section shows you the results of the projects in the book's tutorials, as well as the work of various 3D Studio MAX artists. --Kathleen Caster

Excellent Book,

This review is from: 3D Studio Max R2.5 f/x (Paperback)
When I bought this book a year ago, I was a newbie to 3D Studio Max, but not to animation and design. I agree that this book is not for the someone trying to learn animation, there are other books for that. This book has proven to be an invaluable resource in going to that next step in creation of realistic and exceptional animations. The lessons I learned about applying textures to my models alone justify the purchase of this book. Highly recommended!!!

Bell is an incredible author. Fantastic tutorials that were easy to understand and implement. There are better books out there for beginners, but for all you intermediate max users, you should have this book.

Appropriate For Specific Aims,

This review is from: 3D Studio Max R2.5 f/x (Paperback)
This book does teach the reader how to do certain things that come in handy, but you have to know how to get around in MAX to understand it. I found it useful, but only because I had spent the last month figuring out MAX by myself. Some ideas in the book are not particularly helpful, but there are many others that will enhance your pictures, and the CD comes with some useful plugins.
