Paul Simon boxed set,
This review is from: The Studio Recordings 1972-2000 (Audio CD)
Even though I have all of these cd's, I really like this boxed set-the sound is great, and the extras are great. This man has written music that resonates with me-the 60's throught the 90's(and hoping for a DVD from the "Old Friends" tour). It is worth getting this set just for the sound-I am listening to this music, and it sounds better than ever- It sounds fresh to me.

Could've been better if B-sides, unreleased songs were added,

Paul Simon is one of my favorite singers/song-writers. I took this box set to have the full collection and I'm currently exploring with the albums that I haven't heard before.
The collection would have been better if singles, B-sides, previously unreleased recordings have been added rather than demo and live recordings of songs of the Album. In my opinion, the bonus tracks are not really that significant addition.

For a Simon-lover,

First off, this is 120+ of Paul Simon's songs. And it isn't even the "complete" studio recordings. But it is stil a triumph for any Simon-lover. There are no new special-edition liner notes, but I still gave it 5 stars. The winner of 9-Grammy's gives us a 9-disk masterpiece with music from Kodachrome to Call Me Al, any fan would love this as a gift.

a lot of material,

Okay , how many Paul Simon compilations are there out there ? Which do you chose, and how do you chose ? You don't. You plunk down the $ for this box and get everything Paul has recorded (solo)(studio) up to 2000. You can't go wrong. With every compilation you get edited tracks (mostly chopped for time) , you get tracks left off that really should have been included , and you get frustrated because you STILL don't have the "best of" Paul Simon. Here , you will.

All Simon's albums in a simple sturdy box with nice remastering, booklets and demos/outtakes. I can't tell you how many artists I wished had a no frills collection of their albums in nice editions like this. I'm all about the rarities/b-sides/hard-to-find-tracks box sets too, but you gotta start with a comprehensive album set, and do it right. This is what I'm talking about.
The one drawback is that the cases are digipack, so make sure and store the disks elsewhere to prevent the inevitable breakage and uselessness of the disk holding clips. |
