Absolutely great,
By A Customer
This review is from: Studio: Selected Studio Recordings 1986-1995 (Audio CD)
This is definitely the one CJ album to buy if you are only going to have one. There is not a bad cut on this, and there are numerous great ones. "Powderfinger" by Neil Young & Crazy Horse is one of my favorite rockers, but in the CJ's hands it becomes an ethereal ballad. The CJ's version of "Sweet Jane" is likewise very different from the Velvet Underground's, but equally authentic. The most memorable cuts on this album, however, are the CJ's own songs. They remind me a lot of their Canadian countryman Gordon Lightfoot, with very intelligent lyrics and carefully crafted melodies. Their sound is unique, and Margo Timmins' voice should be declared a national treasure. I can't imagine why they aren't bigger stars. You won't regret adding this to your collection.

Stellar Studio Classics,
By
This review is from: Studio: Selected Studio Recordings 1986-1995 (Audio CD)
This cd is a magnificient hour-long collection of great music from the peerless & unique Cowboy Junkies. The selections (covering tracks from the six studio albums through 1995's "Lay it Down") are presented chronologically and provide the listener the opportunity to experience the growth of the band through the years (not that any growth was really needed). From the early "Shining Moon", the classic "Misguided Angel", to an unreleased 6+ minute studio version of "Lost My Driving Wheel", these songs are literate (Michael Timmins is one of the great songwriters of the past 10 years) and sung with such sultry passion you will be gasping for air. For the unitiated, this is a great place to start your Cowboy Junkies' collection. And for those already familiar with the great Canadian band, this cd provides the perfect summary of their first ten years! Buy it!

This review is from: Studio: Selected Studio Recordings 1986-1995 (Audio CD)
If you are just discovering Cowboy Junkies, this is a great CD to start with. If you are already a fan, it's a superior collection of thier best cuts. Also, you should know that the Cowboy Junkies in general are like a fine aging wine...subtle, soft, but intense...the more you play them, the better they get. Listen to this one over and over, and ENJOY!!!

COMPILATION ONE,
By Daniel S. "Daniel" (Geneva, Switzerland) - See all my reviews
This review is from: Studio: Selected Studio Recordings 1986-1995 (Audio CD)
I've always thought that a good compilation should present the songs I would have chosen if I had to produce the CD. And it's obviously the case with Cowboy Junkies's STUDIO : SELECTED RECORDINGS 1986-1995. Each one of the 14 songs is a favorite of mine."Sweet Jane", "Blue Moon" and "Powderfinger" are exceptional versions of classics and the Michaël Timmins compositions presented in STUDIO are achievements in the canadian author-composer's career. There is only one until then unrecorded song "Lost my driving wheel" ; only a live version of this song was available on the precedent album of the Junkies : 200 MORE MILES. So this compilation should rejoice the CJ fan as well as the curious listener in search of original music. After a few listenings, he will soon order the whole musical production of this first-rate band. A CD for your library.

Any CD collection without this exceptional compilation of Cowboy Junkies songs will remain incomplete until it's purchase. Without a doubt the best greatest hits collection I have ever owned - buy it, get in your car, pop it in and pick a long, lonely highway.

If you only want/need one CJ CD, this is it!,

I can't believe there's only one other review.... This is THE CJ album to own. Great selection of tunes + the unreleased "Driving Wheel," a David Whiffin tune from the early '70's. Even though the disc spans 10 years, it's very seamless. It's all good....

The Cowboy Junkies have always personified the emotional musical experience that stirs in the bottom of your "soul well". This compilation is your bucket. Take a listen, and you will be guided to the light of Michael Timmons' talent. Even the cover of "Powderfinger", by Neil Young, contains an original interpretation of lyrics and music that span the divide of here and ever after. It will not dissapoint the open minded that are willing to go further.

Cowboy Junkies: Studio Sessions,

This is a really good collection... well worth the money. If you like the sounds of the Junkies, this is an all encompassing CD... "Aniversary Song" should be played at every wedding in the country. "Blue Moon" is the quintisential song for entanglements... Their version of "Powderfinger" by Niel Young is tragically beautiful and... Vocals and a Dobro just pull empathy out of you at times... Really good...

No one can sing like Margo Timmins. This is one of my favorite Cowboy Junkie's albums and the liner notes are really excellent. A great selection for the novice fan who wants to check this band out. How can you not fall in love with the sound of Margo's voice?

This album has some of my favorites but "Ring On The Sill" has to be one of the best songs they have ever written or sung. Also Margo Timmins singing of Driving Wheel make this the definitive cover of this song. A truly fantastic collection of tunes.
