I previewed several study guides as well as preparation courses offered for the NCE. Dr. Helwig's study guide was concise and to the point. He provided material that was specific to the content of the test. I utilized the sample test questions included in the guide and found several similar questions on the test.If you are looking for an easy to use reference without alot of extra unnecessary material to review, this is it.The guide also includes test taking techniques and information on formulating a study plan for the exam. I used this guide and followed a study schedule to prepare for the exam. I am happy to say I passed the exam well above the score necessary for certification.

I purchased this book to study for the National Counseling Exam. It is very detailed and I found that many of the detailed items were on the exam. I passed the exam with flying colors due to this study guide, the study guide from NCE, and adequately studying. This study guide was much more extensive and more informative then the guide from NCE. I highly recommend it.

This study guide is awesome! It contains a manageable amount of information, all of which is impressively representative of what is on the NCE. You trulely do not need to spend hundreds of dollars on review materials, this study guide has all you need to pass the NCE.

The sections were thorough, and easy to comprehend. The practice exam at the end of the book prepared me well. I would recommend this book for anyone taking the exam.

I just passed my NCE test with an excellent score and this guide was all that I studied. The sample test was very helpful in identifying my weak areas. I was able to prepare in three weeks. I worried that the manual would be out of date, but it wasn't for the test. (Be aware that the author does mention an on-line-test practice site which I found to be much harder than the actual test. If you use that site, don't let it scare you.)

I found the Helwig manual very helpful. Its explanations and examples are more clear and to the point than the Encyclopedia of Counseling. The Encyclopedia was more like the IDIOTS GUIDE TO..which I find irritating because of all the cutesy filler talk. I like the Manual's detailed step by step examples to illustrate key terms.

This review guide is very throrough and extensive, including items that I have never heard of in my education thus far. It has also been a great extra tool to supplement my current couple and family and group therapy classes. I highly recommend this item.

I have this study guide and the CD collection to study for my NCE exam in a couple of months. I thought that the guide would be more indepth, but after all, it is only meant to be used as a "guide". So I am going through it, section by section and adding material from my class work that the guide has not incorporated. It's a good basic knowledge of everything that I have learnt and more, but I guess I was just thinking that it would be different - more workbook style, with place to write in etc.

I think that it's definitely worth having as it forms a template for where you need to go with you studying. It makes the process much less overwhelming. The results however, are still to be seen - as I haven't taken my test yet.

good info on the test itself, good basic review of topics but not enough detail at times to really be helpful, not well written. Good place to start studying for the exam but won't be sufficient on its own.
