Bill C. is an absolute genius. The book observes college football from a sociological perspective to a deeply personal perspective: and that's all in the first 30 pages. For the stats nerd, he goes there as well, trying to explain what statistic is important to who and how they are valued. He covers many aspects of the personality of the sport in that unique writing style that he uses for SB Nation and Football Study Hall.

This a great read to get ready for the upcoming season (definitely counting down the days). Starting with a great story of the author's budding passion for the game growing up and transitions to a great progression of understanding what stats actually matter in evaluating teams and their performances. Connelly goes on to present his proposal for an enhanced and far more useful box score and finally delves into the age-old difficulty of building and maintaining program success.

Overall I thoroughly enjoyed the book, stats, and stories therein. I highly recommend this for any fan that's interested in a crash course in better understanding the game.

If you are even a casual football fan, you should read this book. First, there are few more insightful commentators in the sports world than Bill Connelly. He notices the little things that matter and is very good at exposing to the reader why they are important. Second, there are few writers who are as good at relating complicated subjects to unsophisticated readers. Yes, there is math, but he explains it in such a way that most people can understand. His writing is very engaging and the book truly is a "page turner."

But, above all, this book is a great celebration of College Football and not just stats. The book has great context built in to it where the stats are really just used to expose how great college football is - which, is the brilliance of Connelly and his overall point.

Bill's book is warm, accessible, and helps decode the advanced stats movement in a way that just about any fan can understand. This book will make you way better at teasing out what really happened during a game outside of an imperfect box score, and brings great insights from coaches, and some of the smartest minds around the sport. A quick read, and a welcome addition to any fan's football library.

Bill Connelly wrote a terrific book here. There's a lot of humor, interesting footnotes, and tremendous anecdotes. Mr. Connelly interviewed other sports writers, as well as athletes and coaches, to create a work that looks at college football from every angle. He thoroughly explains the advanced statistics that are a staple of the work he and others do at footballstudyhall.com and footballoutsiders.com.

The foreword by Jason Kirk and Spencer Hall (of SBNation.com and everydayshouldbesaturday.com) sets the tone for the personal nature of much of the book, where the many people interviewed help explain their own connection to college football, and why it matters so much to themselves and generally in this country. Definitely a must-read for lovers of college football, its stats, and its stories.

Whether it's for the numerous stories interspersed in the text, or for the breakdown of what various statistics are (and more importantly, why they matter), this book draws you in. I can't wait for the season to start again; this book provides a fan the ability to see the game in a number of new lights, from deep statistics to interesting societal backgrounds present in some of the rivalries and conferences.

Money well spent!
