A Valuable Resource for Students,
By Lee M. Pierson (New York, New York) - See all my reviews
This review is from: Study Methods & Motivation: A Practical Guide to Effective Study (Paperback)
Dr. Locke's book is a concise, well-written presentation of the essentials of effective study methods. He presents at least one important topic (study monitoring, i.e., consciously keeping track of the effectiveness of one's study efforts) that I have not seen covered in other similar works. I have used this book profitably in some of my own mind self-management seminars for students.

Solid study skills outline,
By A Customer
This review is from: Study Methods & Motivation: A Practical Guide to Effective Study (Paperback)
This book provides an informative base for sound study skills. The methods presented are very basic and fundamental to the subject of effective study. The concepts will not seem new to most readers but their integration into a logical structure for studying may well be. There exists a few typographical errors in the text and the exercises included could be improved somewhat. Overall a good (but not great) book. Also, it should be noted that this book is geared towards those just entering college.

Useful Companion for Study,
By Adrian Buckland (Sydney, Australia) - See all my reviews
This review is from: Study Methods & Motivation: A Practical Guide to Effective Study (Paperback)
A very well structured and easy to read little book. While there is certainly no ground breaking material here, it does a solid job of intergrating the basic principles of objectivism into study, such as objectivity, rationality, and purpose. I found the sections on active reading, motivational monitoring, and exam-taking especially useful. Since the exercises at the end of the chapters are time-consuming, I only skim read them, but I was still able to get a lot out of this book. Although there are countless study guides out there which all offer basically the same tips and techniques, this one is a gem. I recommend it to any student looking to fufill their potential.

How to keep motivated and get lifetime thinking skills,
This review is from: Study Methods & Motivation: A Practical Guide to Effective Study (Paperback)
This book is full of tips you can start using immediately. What is the most efficient way to study? What specific techniques can you use to program your memory? How can you effectively plan your time? How can you cope with "failure"? or test anxiety? What are some motivational tips? It is an excellent book to help keep you motivated and give you lifetime thinking skills.

Clear, concise, comprehensive,
By Ryan D Jamieson (Toronto, Ontario Canada) - See all my reviews
This review is from: Study Methods & Motivation: A Practical Guide to Effective Study (Paperback)
Dr. Locke is not going to try to convince you that studying is always easy, but if you do put in the effort and follow his guidance, you should do well even at the most challenging University (after all, Dr. Locke must have done well following his own advice!). All chapters are helpful, especially the one on what he calls "study monitoring" wherein he shows you how to keep your mind focused on the material you're reading. The second half of the book is useful if you already know how to study but perhaps lack (or have lapses in) your motivation. As was mentioned in another review, the book does have a handful of typographical errors and the quality of the physical binding could be better, but such things don't really mar the value of the content. Read this book if you're serious and want to succeed in your college career.
