The best book for incoming medical students,
This review is from: Study Without Stress: Mastering Medical Sciences (Paperback)
I've read quite a few books now to prepare myself for medical school and this one is by far the best. It gives you a good idea of how much a medical student needs to study, good advice on how to make your own schedule, and teaches you how to study. She tells the reader that studying in medical school is a whole different world than the studying done in undergrad. She shows you which techniques to use and which to leave behind in with your college books. Her stratagies make memorizing and understanding loads of information seem doable. Buy this book or learn the hard way.

good book, lot of advice, but not always useful,

This book is written by a psychologist and an educator (neither of whom "attended" medical school) and it shows; although there is a vast amount of information and advice in this book, it's often not very useful to the medical student. Reading this book reminds of fans at hockey games that have never played hockey, but still yell "SHOOT, PASS, GO LEFT.." It's very easy to give advice from the side-line, but unless you're actually doing it, it's hard to have a good idea of what it's like.
In anticipation for medical school, i've also read "how to excel in medical school", and more recently "how to study in medical school", and i can honestly say the better books are those authored by MD's (such as the latter two), hence authors that have gone through the process themselves. I feel their advice is a lot more practical and applicable. Overall good, but if i had to choose just one book, i'd probably choose something else.

I was required to purchase this book for the Seton Hall Physician Assistant Program. I have not finished reading it yet, but so far it seems very helpful. Its a great way to learn time management. The book has exercises in it that make you analyze your day down to every 30 minutes to best utilize your time. This book should be good for anyone who needs help with managing study time even if they're not studying medicine. My boyfriend has a rigorous academic schedule at West Point and I'm going to have him read it when I'm done.

Use this like a workbook and it's as good as Gold!,
This review is from: Study Without Stress: Mastering Medical Sciences (Paperback)
I attended a study techniques for medical students course that heavily used this book. Not every single technique listed in the book will work for everyone, but there is enough here to really revolutionize the way you study and make your study time much more high-yield. (Ex: I needed 50 min study sessions w. 10 min breaks, not longer or shorter...But only studying for 3 (50 min + 10 min break) hours in a row was a great idea, esp when I used a timer to keep track!)
To make this book work for you, you have to work *it*. 1) TAKE THE SELF-ASSESMENT QUIZZES at the beginning of each chapter. (I was shocked to find out how much time I was wasting! Or how much time I was allotting for one activity that could really be done in half the time. That's just the beginning...also has quizzes to assess exam anxiety, etc.) 2) DO THE SUGGESTED ACTIVITIES. (Sometimes if you move through a chapter a week or two and really focus on practicing the behavioral modifications given in the book, you'll have much better success at learning new more effective ways to manage studies, time, and stress. Other chapters can be done in the same day.) 3) PRACTICE! (You are in the major leagues now! And professional athletes didn't get there with out years of practice. So practice the things you learn regularly, be strict with yourself, and you'll be amazed at how much more effective you become.) Good luck on your studies! Using this book pulled up my grades over a letter grade. I hope it helps!

I bought this book for my daughter who attends medical school. It helped raise her test scores. I recommend this book for anyone in undergraduate and graduate studies especially those majoring in the scientific disciplines.

Has a good chart which helps you choose the most appropriate study technique for a particular type of material.

Useless,

Vague, useless. The other reviewer is right: stick to med school study-help books written by MD's (i.e. those that have gone through med school), not by psychologists/educators.
Not to mention it's overpriced. "How to study in medical school" for example is half the price of this book, but sooo much better and more applicable.
