And now, following in the triumphant path of the Monarch mechanical calendar pocket watch, comes the Monarch Moon a genuine moon phase quartz pocket piece. The Monarch Moon from Stührling Original boasts one of the most dynamic features in the world of horology, a genuine moon phase indication. Powering the timepiece is the steadfast Citizen-Miyota 6P21 quartz movement which also allows for the day of the week and date complications. With its retractable stand on the backside, the Monarch Moon makes a great desk ornament with its calendar for those times when you choose not to carry this extraordinary conversation piece in your pocket. The dial is magnificently dressed with vertical embossed striping on the main dial and a concentric circle design on the sub-dials. The silver faceted alpha style hands and markers are striking as they catch and refract the light in all directions. You may feel like a Monarch every time you pull the Monarch Moon out of your pocket to check the time. The case is forged from 316L surgical grade stainless steel with a large domed Krysterna™ crystal on the front to ensure durability. This fantastic multi-complication masterpiece is controlled by the pull-out knurled edge crown at twelve o’clock. In the workshops of Stuhrling Original, the unit specializing in mechanical movements, component selection, assembly, lubrication, adjustment and testing creates horological wonders entirely under vigilant attention of Swiss ownership and supervision. It is these workshops that produce the mechanical engines that are famous for meeting the highest existing criteria in there category. Starting with the main plate, the assembly process is performed in several consecutive stages up until anchoring the balance spring, which sets the watch into motion. Assembling a Stuhrling Original mechanical automatic movement comprises no less than 30 checkpoints, spread throughout the assembly process. Adjusting the angle of lift of the pallets, centering the balance-spring, poising the balance are just a few examples of these checkpoints; of which all are designed to enhance the performance of each movement. The movement must meet no less than seven criteria, including a mean variation in rate which is the highest standard in the industry in its class.

Stuhrling Original cases are distinguished by their technical complexity, their high-end aesthetic appeal and the quality of their finish. The watch cases are made from antimagnetic 316L surgical grade stainless steel, an extremely sophisticated alloy designed to stand up to intensive use. The rough parts, known as "middlecases" are blanked from a metal bar using a high-performance press. They then undergo eight successive stamping operations of a strength increasing gradually from 20 to 85 tons. Before each swaging operation, the middlecase is refired at a temperature of 1100 degrees Celsius, so as to temporarily reduce the hardness to a total stamping pressure of more than 400 tons. Finishing the cases then calls for fifteen polishing operations, all performed by hand alternating with nine baths guaranteeing immaculate cleanliness. Other components of the cases, such as rotating bezels or rider tabs also require a meticulous finish. The components of the cases are finally assembled by hand and rigorously tested.

Each Stuhrling Original dial has been designed to enable optimal read-off at a glance, while adding an element of artistic design. Stuhrling Original's dials are blanked from a brass plate and two cylindrical feet are soldered below to ensure security with the movement. Polishing operations, creating special effects through the use of vintage hydraulic German machines, and electroplating are just some of the more than forty operations required to make most StuhrlingOriginal dials. The transparent protective coating is applied in an immaculately clean environment before the various inscriptions are transfer printed using a gelatin pad which takes an impression from an inked block. On many of the dials the hour markers are either individually applied by hand or embossed into the dial and then topped with a special dye. The application of Super Luminova is performed by artisans with a nozzle pen connected to a high-pressure pipe which calls for intense concentration. Once finished, each dial undergoes careful aesthetic scrutiny under extreme magnification, as well as technical testing, to ensure it complies with all predefined dimensions and specifications.

Out of the box I thought I got a keeper and was proud to carry it but after only a few days things started to happen that caused me some concern. First, I didn't like the chain because I thought it was cheaply made and the end result it catches on the lip of my watch pocket. The stand on the backside was not flush so that tells me the tooling isn't perfect as Swiss watches are known so the impression was this was built on an assembly line. The D-ring that the chain connects to the watch is loose to the point that I thought it was broke or sprung, I thought it was going to just fall off. Lastly, after about two weeks it started to lose time, today alone it lost 30 minutes. So I am returning this junker for a refund and will buy a reliable WENGER, which is what I had planned to do in the first place but I liked the looks of this big shinny thing. If asked I will tell you to buy a different watch, you will be happier as a result. Thank you for your time.

This watch has a nice weighty feel to it and I am very pleased with the moon phase function, it matches the phases of the moon very accurately. The day and the date are also nifty functions to have. Right now my only concern is the watch is running a little slow, which may be a result of this particular watch. I am sending it in to see what the problem is, and I will update this review.

I bought this as I am a collector and user of Pocket watches. While this photo looks great, it is very hard to read the day and date on this watch once you wear it. The back stand is not aligned cleanly in the back resulting in a not flush fitting.
Lastly, the reason we buy pocket watches is to keep time. This watch lost time almost from the first day. At first I thought I may have not reset the stem. But by the second day, I saw a marked losing of time, almost ten minutes in 12 hours!! This is not what I want in a pocket watch. I have a Mondaine pocket watch which was in the same price range as this and it keeps dead accurate time.
Regrettably, while this looks very nice, it is poorly crafted for keeping proper time. I have returned same for a refund from Amazon and would warn possible buyers that if all you want is a nice appearing watch, this is fine. When it comes to keeping time, avoid this watch until they can put together a watch that is a consistently good time keeper!!
