With its large 42½ millimeter case made from solid 316L surgical grade stainless steel and solid link bracelet, The Regatta provides a masculine yet classy look that suits the lifestyle of just about any man. Contributing to the elegant appeal is the uni-directional ratcheting bezel; at 5.5mm, the bezel is uncommonly narrower than found on most timepieces from the diver category. The effect of the slim bezel creates an illusion that the watch is even larger than it already is. The face of the watch looks larger because it is larger than a dial normally would be in a 42, even a 43mm case. The design on the bezel brilliantly complements the overall look and the name of the series as it sports a series of fanned arcs creating a look of waves or water. That wave design has been milled into the bezel and provides a fitting backdrop to the raised polished chapters on the ring. The traditional triangular marker for the zero position features a luminous dot for a little extra readability in the dark. The dial of The Regatta features a “simple dimple” design and Luminova™ filled trapezoidal markers all the way around plus the Arabic numeral for the twelve o’clock position. The skeletonized luminous sport style hands give further support to the Regatta theme and the cyclops for the date magnification sits atop the Krysterna™ crystal at the six o’clock position. The straightforward three-hand movement with its quick-set date is powered by the 21-jewel mechanical automatic movement (caliber ST-91006) has 38 hours of autonomy and beats at 21,600 vibrations per hour. The screwed in exhibition case-back reveals the brilliantly decorated movement with its Cotes de Genève treatment on the back plates and the Damier finished rotor with the Stührling signature logo. The screw-down knurled edge crown protected with guard rails on the case allows for water resistance to 330 feet. The triple row link bracelet with the outside rows of links sporting a brushed satin finish contrasting beautifully with the larger center row being treated with a high polish makes a seamless complement for the case which has a satin finish on top while presenting polished sides! The bracelet is completed expertly with a stainless steel deployant clasp featuring a safety lock emblazoned with the Stührling signed logo.

In the workshops of Stuhrling Original, the unit specializing in mechanical movements, component selection, assembly, lubrication, adjustment and testing creates horological wonders entirely under vigilant attention of Swiss ownership and supervision. It is these workshops that produce the mechanical engines that are famous for meeting the highest existing criteria in there category. Starting with the main plate, the assembly process is performed in several consecutive stages up until anchoring the balance spring, which sets the watch into motion. Assembling a Stuhrling Original mechanical automatic movement comprises no less than 30 checkpoints, spread throughout the assembly process. Adjusting the angle of lift of the pallets, centering the balance-spring, poising the balance are just a few examples of these checkpoints; of which all are designed to enhance the performance of each movement. The movement must meet no less than seven criteria, including a mean variation in rate which is the highest standard in the industry in its class.

Stuhrling Original cases are distinguished by their technical complexity, their high-end aesthetic appeal and the quality of their finish. The watch cases are made from antimagnetic 316L surgical grade stainless steel, an extremely sophisticated alloy designed to stand up to intensive use. The rough parts, known as "middlecases" are blanked from a metal bar using a high-performance press. They then undergo eight successive stamping operations of a strength increasing gradually from 20 to 85 tons. Before each swaging operation, the middlecase is refired at a temperature of 1100 degrees Celsius, so as to temporarily reduce the hardness to a total stamping pressure of more than 400 tons. Finishing the cases then calls for fifteen polishing operations, all performed by hand alternating with nine baths guaranteeing immaculate cleanliness. Other components of the cases, such as rotating bezels or rider tabs also require a meticulous finish. The components of the cases are finally assembled by hand and rigorously tested.

Each Stuhrling Original dial has been designed to enable optimal read-off at a glance, while adding an element of artistic design. Stuhrling Original's dials are blanked from a brass plate and two cylindrical feet are soldered below to ensure security with the movement. Polishing operations, creating special effects through the use of vintage hydraulic German machines, and electroplating are just some of the more than forty operations required to make most StuhrlingOriginal dials. The transparent protective coating is applied in an immaculately clean environment before the various inscriptions are transfer printed using a gelatin pad which takes an impression from an inked block. On many of the dials the hour markers are either individually applied by hand or embossed into the dial and then topped with a special dye. The application of Super Luminova is performed by artisans with a nozzle pen connected to a high-pressure pipe which calls for intense concentration. Once finished, each dial undergoes careful aesthetic scrutiny under extreme magnification, as well as technical testing, to ensure it complies with all predefined dimensions and specifications.

I could NOT be happier with this watch! It looks great and has a really nice weight to it. When I brought it to the little jewelry kiosk in the mall to get the band sized, the guy looks at it and goes, "Oooh, a Stuhrling! I don't see too many of these... Nice watch, you will be very happy with it". Its got a really interesting viewable movement through the back. I love this watch....

I was looking for a watch I could swim with but that also looked good enough to wear to work/dinners/dates etc. I found just what I was looking for in this watch. It comes in a very impressive package, and just opening the box and seeing it was exciting, it looks much nicer up close than it does in the picture. I have not taken it off since I got it, I've showered with it, I went into the pool with it, worked out with it, and so far it still looks just as new.

It's a great starter for people new to the timepiece scene, but in my case it's a keeper. I couldn't be happier with my purchase, worth every penny.

Amazon had a great limited time promotion on this Black Ion-Plated Stuhrling Water Sports Regatta Automatic Dive Watch so I took them up on the deal. I had been looking for another everyday watch and thought the black on black design would fit my needs. Once I received this watch I took it to a local jeweler to have them properly size it. Then I wore it every day for a week to check for form, fit and function. Here is what I noted during that initial week:

The look and feel of the watch is very nice and is well balanced. The stainless steel black bezel, black divoted face and black case are all very attractive and the two tone stainless steel black bracelet (polished inner links with mat outer links) compliments the watch very nicely.

The static safety clasp (no moving parts as apposed to Amazon's description & picture of a two button release mechanism) appears to hold well for now and has "Stuhrling Original" etched onto it for a nice subtle touch.

There does not seem to be enough adjustment in the links to support all wrist sizes. The jeweler removed all the adjustable links, then adjusted the linkage on to the clasp to its minimum setting yet I could still lose one more link to fit my standard wrist size. But this is a minor point.

The skeletonized hands with luminescent tips are very bright after initial light exposure and diminish over a sufficient amount of time. The hours are marked with luminescent dashes except at the twelve o-clock position where the Arabic numeral "12" is found.

Stuhrling's proprietary crystal "Krysterna" is clear and is purported to be better than sapphire in its shatter and scratch resistance. There is a Krysterna window on the back of the watch as well for easy viewing of the mechanical automatic winding mechanism which drives the watch. Bright blue screws on the stainless steel mechanism can be seen through this crystal.

The black bezel is unidirectional (moving counter clockwise only) and is easily adjustable with audible clicks with each turn. The bezel has an interesting wave pattern etched into it and is very subtle to the casual on-looker. There is a single luminescent marker at the "60" minute location on the bezel and there are round etched markers at every minute from "60" to "15." Every 10th minute after "15" is marked with etched Arabic numerals (i.e. "20", "30", "40", and "50") and an etched dash mark at every 5th minute in between.

The watch is easy to set using the screw down adjustment crown though fine adjustments of the hour hand are sometimes a little jerky.

During normal operation, the minute and hour hands sweep the face in a smooth motion while the second hand advances in 1/4 second steps. The date window at the six o-clock position is small, but there is a small magnifying bubble on the Krysterna crystal to focus on the Arabic date numerals for ease of reading.

Out of the box, this watch does not seem to hold accurate time over the course of an entire week. My watch appears to need fine tuning by a watch jeweler to compensate for the 2-1/2 minute gain in time each week. The mechanism is quiet and non-distracting.

Pros:
Nice looking automatic watch for everyday use or for special occasions.
Stuhrling's proprietary crystal "Krysterna" is clear and scratch-proof.
Inexpensive (through Amazon at least) automatic watch.
The mechanism is quiet.

Cons:
Needs fine tuning to hold time accurately.
Bracelet needs to be more adjustable to fix average size wrists.
When setting time, fine adjustment of hour hand can be jerky.

Overall:
This is an inexpensive watch with the look and feel of something more expensive. Once I get the watch adjusted to be more accurate, I will definitely wear this watch more often.
