While we have done a Mad Man in a chronograph timepiece in the past, we felt that the only way to pay proper respect to such a popular series is to design and produce an Automatic Timepiece within the original case design. The result of our hard work: the bold and outspoken Mad Man Skelly. This ultra-modern timepiece expands the bold and highly masculine themes set forth by the original Mad Man, from the massive case to the ever-impressive dial work. The Skelly starts with a curved stainless steel case that features extended lungs, and inside, a 20 jewel mechanical automatic movement powers its complications. This movement, beautifully engraved, is revealed through the skeletonized dial and exhibition case-back. The Skelly also features individually applied Arabic numerals and baton style indices atop a well-decorated dial. As expected from a Stuhrling Original timepiece, the Mad Man Skelly’s case was blanked from solid bars of 316L surgical grade stainless steel and protected by scratch-resistant Krysterna crystals. The high grade silicon rubber strap is extremely soft and comfortable and comes with stainless steel inserts near the legs for added style. A stainless steel tang buckle secures the watch comfortably around your wrist.

In the workshops of Stuhrling Original, the unit specializing in mechanical movements, component selection, assembly, lubrication, adjustment and testing creates horological wonders entirely under vigilant attention of Swiss ownership and supervision. It is these workshops that produce the mechanical engines that are famous for meeting the highest existing criteria in there category. Starting with the main plate, the assembly process is performed in several consecutive stages up until anchoring the balance spring, which sets the watch into motion. Assembling a Stuhrling Original mechanical automatic movement comprises no less than 30 checkpoints, spread throughout the assembly process. Adjusting the angle of lift of the pallets, centering the balance-spring, poising the balance are just a few examples of these checkpoints; of which all are designed to enhance the performance of each movement. The movement must meet no less than seven criteria, including a mean variation in rate which is the highest standard in the industry in its class.

Stuhrling Original cases are distinguished by their technical complexity, their high-end aesthetic appeal and the quality of their finish. The watch cases are made from antimagnetic 316L surgical grade stainless steel, an extremely sophisticated alloy designed to stand up to intensive use. The rough parts, known as "middlecases" are blanked from a metal bar using a high-performance press. They then undergo eight successive stamping operations of a strength increasing gradually from 20 to 85 tons. Before each swaging operation, the middlecase is refired at a temperature of 1100 degrees Celsius, so as to temporarily reduce the hardness to a total stamping pressure of more than 400 tons. Finishing the cases then calls for fifteen polishing operations, all performed by hand alternating with nine baths guaranteeing immaculate cleanliness. Other components of the cases, such as rotating bezels or rider tabs also require a meticulous finish. The components of the cases are finally assembled by hand and rigorously tested.

Each Stuhrling Original dial has been designed to enable optimal read-off at a glance, while adding an element of artistic design. Stuhrling Original's dials are blanked from a brass plate and two cylindrical feet are soldered below to ensure security with the movement. Polishing operations, creating special effects through the use of vintage hydraulic German machines, and electroplating are just some of the more than forty operations required to make most StuhrlingOriginal dials. The transparent protective coating is applied in an immaculately clean environment before the various inscriptions are transfer printed using a gelatin pad which takes an impression from an inked block. On many of the dials the hour markers are either individually applied by hand or embossed into the dial and then topped with a special dye. The application of Super Luminova is performed by artisans with a nozzle pen connected to a high-pressure pipe which calls for intense concentration. Once finished, each dial undergoes careful aesthetic scrutiny under extreme magnification, as well as technical testing, to ensure it complies with all predefined dimensions and specifications.

Amazon says that the retail is almost $645.00, but it is really $250.00 retail, even though no one is asking for that price because it is a very cheaply made and undependable watch.

The sales price at other web sites is about $160.00, but in reality the watch is a $50.00 watch, if that. It is made in China, and is not Swiss made, it is thick and bulky, and uncomfortable to wear with its rubber wrist band.

It has a Chinese made downward movement. But was reasonably error-free, for a while. However, it has to be wound up every day, and after about a month of use, had to be reset daily because it would lose 2-3 minutes per day.

Purchased for me as a gift, but this watch only lasted on my wrist until it became too much trouble to keep the correct time on it. I also did not care enough to pay shipping charges to, and from Stuhrling, plus a $20.00 flat fee to have it fixed under warranty.

I'll say right off the bat this watch was an impulse buy. I've been looking for a reasonably priced automatic skeleton and this watch fit the bill. I neglected to pay attention to how big the watch actually is. It's pretty heavy too. Amazon does post multiple views of the watch including the measurements of the case which is accurate. With that being said, I still like the watch. It seems to be well made and is by far a statement piece. If you don't like big heavy watches then you may want to hold off on this one. If you're like me and wear a variety of watches then by all means, give it a shot, you probably won't be disappointed.

We'll see how this watch survives the test of time.

First of all, the watch comes in a really neat box and was fun to open and explore. The watch itself as great looking, and I recieve compliments on it all of the time. As to the cheaply made comment...it seems to be anything but. It looks as though it was created with precision and high quality materials. Great buy overall!!
