D.J. MushOne & Luis Zuluaga have done it!,
By
This review is from: Stuntin' (Audio CD)
This is what happens when you tear two limbs from an overpowering body like The Slackers: they become their very own body, mind, and soul.Mush1 and Zuluaga have fused that Bop mentality with traditional JamDown sounds mixed with a lil' of that MoTown feel and a spicy touch of Latim rhythm thus creating a MONSTER of a project! There are a handful of killer instrumentals, then you have Alicia Williams (daughter of 1940'/1950's Jamaican big-band vocalist Garland Phinn of the Sonny Bradshaw Orchestra) at the helm for quite a few songs. And even though Mush1 only sings lead on 3 tracks, you can feel his intensity throughout the entire playback. Mush1's voice takes me back to the days of the great Caribbean/Mento & Calypso vocalists of the 50's and 60's. Every track on here is a winner, especially "Dey Wid You" & "JAH is Waiting". There are also excellent covers of B. Bacharach's "Walk on By" & B. Marley's "play play play". The Scorchers have made musical history! If you don't have it, buy it! If you have it, play it out and buy it again!

SCORCHERS GIVE SLACKERS A RUN FOR THEIR MONEY,
By
This review is from: Stuntin' (Audio CD)
One of the greatest recent ska/reggae albums period. After leaving the great Slackers, Mush 1 (Trumpet, vocals) & Luis Zaluaga (Drums) have crafted, along w/their new gifted bandmates a modern day ska classic. No, this is not jumpy "pick-it-up" style pop-ska, but rather tough soulish 60's style crucial ska. But ska is a tough word to define the tracks, instrumentals aside, because 60's rocksteady, skinhead reggae, and ol'school Jamaican soul are generously factored in. If you like your ska really chilled, laid back & "traditional" w/both female (Alicia Williams) & male vocals (Mush 1)--this album's for you! This album is the album The Slackers WERE SUPPOSED TO MAKE BUT NEVER DID. This CD seriously gives The Slackers a run for their money. The Slackers' last three albums were pretty good (most recent one,"Self Medication" standing out) but are no-where near the caliber of "Red Light", or "The Question". This album, however ranks among those two. Seriously, this is a freakin' brilliant album--their cover of "Walk On By" (A song I love in the first place) just sends shivers up your spine, "Play Play Play" sounds so melodic & tantalizing you won't be able to get it out of your head! And Mush's retro-jamaican styled-vocals on several of the tracks (most notably "Your Only Man") just make you wish you were back in the golden 60's era of reggae spinning some vinyl. If you are a skinhead, mod, or rudie (or were), and/or still love and support ska---DEFINATELY buy this now!!! You won't be disapointed. If you are disapointed--you are not a true ska fan.All I want to know now is--when's the next one coming out?!!
