5.0 out of 5 stars A valuable resource for a no-nonsense road map to healthcare
As a weight loss expert and professional strength coach I was elated to see a book come along that drives home the idea of preventative health care and a proactive approach to wellness. I was especially delighted as John Corso's book "Stupid Reasons People Die," challenges a person's belief about himself or herself and promotes a "hands-on" approach with regard to...

3.0 out of 5 stars Defending the Status Quo
Unless this is the only health-related book a person has read, for the vast majority of people there is not likely to be much in this book that is new information. The author does a good job of defending the status quo of the health industry. And his "solution" to the current health care crisis - physicians should each get a few hundred people to pay them a $1,000 per...

Dr. Corso's does 3 things well in his book. He describes complex medical conditions in a straightforward manner with simple language. He explains how the relationship between patients, doctors, and their health insurers has become warped. Finally, he provides a strategy that we can all use to take control of our health care and make informed decisions to maximize our health. This is a good read for someone who wants to make sense of how to be proactive in health care.

5.0 out of 5 stars Saved my life, March 22, 2007
This review is from: Stupid Reasons People Die, An Ingenious Plot For Defusing Deadly Diseases (Hardcover)
At age forty, I was still operating under the assumption that I am indestructible...probably immortal even. I'd lived a charmed life where health was concerned. When a friend suggested I read STUPID REASONS PEOPLE DIE, I left it on my night stand for months. When I finally peeled back the cover I was taken in an instant. Dr. Corso's humor and instantly relatable writing style pulled me in. Once "in" I found that I agreed with his assertions regarding managing your health. That revelation led to a few blood tests, which led to the discovery that I wasn't the "Ox" I'd thought I was. My cholesterol was mysteriously high and I went on to find other symptoms of heart disease. My doctor classified me as a "time bomb" that was set to go off had I not taken action. I'm an avid reader and yet, this is the first time I've taken a minute to jot out a review. This is important stuff...take care of yourself, read it!!!

5.0 out of 5 stars What was I thinking?!, April 7, 2007
This review is from: Stupid Reasons People Die, An Ingenious Plot For Defusing Deadly Diseases (Hardcover)
Talk about an eye opener! Reading "Stupid Reasons" reminded me of when I first read Rich Dad Poor Dad in 2003. I realized then, with shock and disbelief, how dumb I'd been with my money and how obvious the steps to financial freedom seemed once they were pointed out. Same thing here. I (and just about everyone I know) had the "good health" and "long-life" strategy all backwards. This book cleared up dozens of stupid misconcepions I held about health and wellness. I'm just glad it's not too late. A must-read.

As a management consultant who travels a lot and doesn't take care of himself, I am glad to find Dr. Corso's book. This easy to read, humorous book presents information that will save your life. Dr. Corso employs two important management principles; the first is the 80/20 rule (Pareto rule) which advises to work on the 20 percent of tasks that get you 80 per cent of the results. Dr. Corso identifies those health tests and treatments that get you the most for your time. The second management principle is what gets measured, gets managed. If you measure the right ones, you will manage your health wisely! Ergo you will take the right medicine, treatments and supplements. That fact is as Dr. Corso so aptly puts it "Your number one, greatest risk of dying is from a disease that can be prevented or successfully treated." Find out what they are from Dr. Corso.
This book is for you if you are tired of the hype, the misdirection and the gnawing worry for your health. This book can save your life!

I found the book so easy to understand and full of very useful information. I gave copies to a friend and family members. I even took it to my annual check-up and asked my doctor about some of the suggested tests.
I would highly recommend this book to anyone.

5.0 out of 5 stars Wow! A very enlightening and FUN read!, March 18, 2007
This review is from: Stupid Reasons People Die, An Ingenious Plot For Defusing Deadly Diseases (Hardcover)
This book was so full of great information. I never knew about these few simple tests which could slash my chances of stupidly dying. I also didn't know why doctors operate their practices like they do. What doctor would ever go into family practice/internal medicine these days? It was in clear and understandable prose with simple "to do" steps which gave me a great sense of control over my health destiny. I thought I was a pretty savvy person medically but this book filled in some huge gaps I didn't even know I had. I was also greatly entertained by Dr. Corso's easy style. Everyone should read this and tell their loved ones about it. I feel like I was walking a tightrope and this book was my net.

How refreshing to read the words of a true professional who really cares about people! His patients are so lucky to have him as their physician. His humor clearly comes through as you read the book. I recommend this book to anyone who really wants to help themselves live full and healthy lives.

5.0 out of 5 stars A solidly practical, no-nonsense guide, June 9, 2007
This review is from: Stupid Reasons People Die, An Ingenious Plot For Defusing Deadly Diseases (Hardcover)
Medical doctor John Corso puts his twenty years of professional experience to paper in Stupid Reasons People Die: An Ingenious Plot for Defusing Deadly Diseases, a thorough condemnation of the modern healthcare system's erosion of the quality, time, and rewards of medical practice. Chapters discuss how to avoid becoming a hostage of the insurance industry, a logically critical perspective of "all natural" treatments, advice for protecting oneself or spotting the warning signs of diseases that can be prevented or successfully treated, and much more. Specific common killers that are easily prevented, detected early, or treated, include brittle bones (especially in women), sleep apnea, and many cancers from colon cancer to prostate cancer, breast cancer, and others. A solidly practical, no-nonsense guide to avoiding senseless disease or medicine-related death in one's prime. Stupid Reasons People Die carries the highest possible recommendation, as reading it just might save one's life.
