4.0 out of 5 stars Dr. Laura lacks compassion, empathy and detachment
Good for Ms. Pearl! Her book may not be the best of it's type on the market, but I give her four stars for having the guts and gumption to write a book that takes on the harridan of the airwaves! I too have cringed with vicarious humiliation as I listened to Dr. Laura disparage and belittle her callers. I am a family counselor in private practice. What I have learned...

I suppose values and common sense means nothing to this author. I would not recommend this book to anyone.

Unfortunately, Ms. Pearl doesn't give the young, old, single, married or otherwise woman any wisdom to build on. A very disappointing book.

1.0 out of 5 stars Waste of money !, September 28, 1999
By A Customer
This review is from: Ten Stupid Things Dr. Laura Tells Women to do to Mess up Their Lives (Paperback)
Do not waste your money on this book. If you searched for Dr. Laura, you would be better off to get one of her books. MS Pearl should read "Ten Stupid Things Women Do To Mess Up There Lives", because she's done them all. I believe the guilt from her messed up life is very well potrayed in this book. Dr. Laura hit a "raw nerve" called "Mother's guilt" and MS Pearl is retaliating. MS Pearl is a very bitter women.

1.0 out of 5 stars Climb down off your high horse, November 10, 2007
This review is from: Ten Stupid Things Dr. Laura Tells Women to do to Mess up Their Lives (Paperback)
Many of you writting reviews like to talk about Dr. Laura's past. We all have past. We have all done stupid things we regret later, but with any luck at all they are some of our best life lessons. I would rather someone who has made mistakes and learned from them give me advice, than someone sitting on their high horse! Instead of getting defensive because you've made some of the mistakes she talks about, you might actually try listening and trying to learn and improve yourself. I too have made most of the mistakes she talks about. She's right, I've listened and learned and my life counldn't be better.

1.0 out of 5 stars THIS AUTHOR IS OBVIOUSLY UNABLE TO LEARN FROM HER MISTAKES, November 6, 1999

This review is from: Ten Stupid Things Dr. Laura Tells Women to do to Mess up Their Lives (Paperback)
I THINK THAT LIFE AND THE EXPERIENCES THAT A PERSON GOES THROUGH IS WORTH MORE CREDIBILITY THAN ANY COLLEGE DEGREE COULD EVER GIVE. WE ALL HAVE A CLOSET FULL OF SKELETONS, IT IS WHAT WE LEARN FROM THOSE SKELETONS THAT CAN MAKE US BETTER PEOPLE. DR. LAURA MAY BE A BIT ROUGH FOR US AT FIRST. IT CAN SOMETIMES BE VERY DIFFICULT TO REALLY LOOK AT OURSELVES IN THE MIRROR. IT'S EASIER FOR ONE TO PUT SOME ONE DOWN WHEN THAT PERSON IS STRONGER THAN THEY ARE.

Ms Pearl has found a way to make money off of other peoples fame. If she or others don't like Dr. Laura, Turn your radio off.

3.0 out of 5 stars comment to first review, April 22, 1999
By A Customer
This review is from: Ten Stupid Things Dr. Laura Tells Women to do to Mess up Their Lives (Paperback)
You really ought to remove the first review; it's not a review of the book but a slam of the author. I haven't read the book, though from the excerpt it looks like the author hasn't done enough of her homework. Nonetheless, it's silly to allow a review that insults the author's motives for disagreeing with her subject, and doesn't even back up his? her? contention. "Turn the radio off" is not an appropriate response. Dr. Laura is quite dangerous, and it's important that her misinformation be answered, lest her fans think she's qualified to speak about psychology (she isn't), religion (nope), or ethics (nuh-uh). Laura's Ph.D. is not in psychology but PHYSIOLOGY. She has no training in religion or ethics. Her "private practice" was as an MFCC, which is NOT a "psychologist" or even a "psychotherapist." It's a "Marriage, Family, and Child Counselor" credential, and is a Masters, not Doctoral degree. And yet over 75% of her audience thinks she's a pscyhologist or psychiatrist.

Turn off the radio? No, no, no! Listen, my friend, and be afraid. Be very, very afraid.

1.0 out of 5 stars Amazon.com, I've lost faith in you since you sell this book., May 12, 1999

Amazon.com, be responsible. Drop Ms Pearl's book. I used to suggest to friends that they try amazon.com. If you sell junk like Ms Pearl's book, I think I'll stop suggesting amazon.com to friends.

4.0 out of 5 stars Dr. Laura lacks compassion, empathy and detachment, October 29, 1999

What I have learned is that no matter how poorly a person is coping, at any given moment they are doing their best - or they would be doing it better! Everybody - no matter what their race, gender, age or status ultimately wants the same things - to be heard, to be seen, to have their perceptions acknowledged. Everyone's actions, no matter how misguided, are efforts to be understood, appreciated and loved by those whom they love. Most people already suffer to some degree from low-self esteem and carry inside their head an ever-critical internal committee constantly gathering evidence of their lack of worthiness. I cannot bear to hear Dr. Laura confirm her callers' worst suspicions about themselves, or to hear her articulate her judgments and condemnations of her callers without one trace of compassion for the frailties of being human or of forgiveness for the mistakes we all make along the way. Dr. Laura demonstrates a self-rightousness and egoism that shows her to be a neither a good Christian nor a good counseling psychologist, and I am so glad that someone had the guts to call her on it.

5.0 out of 5 stars I agree with MS PEARL, May 22, 1999
By A Customer
This review is from: Ten Stupid Things Dr. Laura Tells Women to do to Mess up Their Lives (Paperback)
Well, I haven't read this book, but I did read Dr. Laura's and I agree with the excerpt from MS PEARL's book that is printed here. I came away with the same impression of Dr. Laura after reading her book. And I have never heard Dr. Laura's radio show. But based on the excerpt here, it sounds like Dr. Laura's radio show and her book consist of the same thing - her doling out insults and bad advice to unwitting females everywhere. I am going to have to read this book now, because I thought I was the only one who thought Dr. Laura is somewhat of a quack (just based on her book).
