A MUST READ FOR ELECTION YEAR - IT WILL INSPIRE YOU!!!,
By Anna Lappe (Brooklyn, NY United States) - See all my reviews
This review is from: How to Get Stupid White Men Out of Office: The Anti-Politics, Un-Boring Guide to Power (Paperback)
It's easy to feel discouraged. Every day we learn something new about how our government has consistently lied to the American public. It's easy to feel powerless. But after reading this book -- and learning the amazing stories of everyday people around this country who stood up for what they believed in -- I swear, you will be inspired. Those in power want to stay in power, and one of their most effective tactics is making the majority of us who want to see regime change feel apathetic. This book is sure-fire antidote. Read it and pass it on.

Much better than Prozac,

This book is fantastic -- entertaining, enlightening, and most of all, inspiring. It's an incredible lift for anyone who is feeling frustrated, discouraged or depressed about the current political situation. Much better than Prozac. I loved the user friendly format, stories I could relate to, and the humor, especially the wacky mini-interviews. Buy one for yourself and 10 for your friends. It's that good.

THIS BOOK COULD SWING THE ELECTION! Just when you thought you were down with all the impossible-sounding idealistic liberal and progressive day-dreamers, here comes this ACTION PACKED book on how to ACTUALLY MAKE CHANGE! Coming from renowned underground and grassroots activists who normally shun the electoral system, now they convince and inspire us to work within the system by telling actual success stories of how people made substantial progressive change by swinging local to national elections. It is an easy read, really fun, quick, quippy and exciting. Definitely not long and boring politics book. This has a special appeal to youth to stand up and it will give you a lot of ideas to chew on and probably feel pretty good about. GET IT!

if there's anything in the world that could convince people who are disillusioned with the electoral process that voting actually matters, it's this book. Excellent Political Primer for Young Folks,

This review is from: How to Get Stupid White Men Out of Office: The Anti-Politics, Un-Boring Guide to Power (Paperback)
How to Get Stupid White Men Out of Office is a guide for young political activists. Despite its title, this is a book that all young people who is engaged in politics at the grassroots level can use to their profit regardless of their ideological persuasion. All 12 co-authors are activists who also have normal lives which stands in contrast to so many previous books on political activism that make it sound like you have to devote your entire life to politics. This is a book about making politics both fun and effective and those who read it should find it most useful both this and future election years.

Ok, ok so i'm a co-editor of this book but i also have to say that i just reread the whole thing altogether for the first time since we sent it to the printer and the hard work that all these writers and authors put into it just blows me away. Its a fantastic, touching book - you'll laugh and cry and then become a voter organizer in your neighborhodd, you'll go to indyvoter.org and sign up, you'll ask for it in every bookstore you enter, you'll buy it for friends and family, you'll sleep with it under your pillow. FOR REAL. Get your copy y'all. Do not sleep on the electoral revolution!!

I got this book a few days ago and couldn't put it down.I am recommending it to EVERYONE, including strangers. I was a 60's demonstrator, and nothing since then has gotten me this excited that CHANGE IS POSSIBLE. The tools, the stories, the wisdom, the genuiness, the grass roots feeling is all there. Its not perfectly written, but its passion is fabulous. Lets get together and save our country! This book is a great first start. Go to www.indyvoter.org for more info on what they're up to, whether you get the book or not!

1-Star, 1-Sentence Reviews Made By Folks Only Reading Book's Title!,
By Danny G. (Baltimore, Maryland USA) - See all my reviews
This review is from: How to Get Stupid White Men Out of Office: The Anti-Politics, Un-Boring Guide to Power (Paperback)
I'm a non-stupid White Guy. The title is not racist. It states a simple fact - the vast majority of real political and economic power is currently held (in 2006) in the hand's of Stupid White Men! This is certainly the case currently in the United States. The truth is not racist, but reality. I also personally know plenty of wannabes!
The book is not condescending or useless. It inspires! It motivates! The Green Party Mayor of New Paltz, New York was arrested for officially marrying Gay couples. Senator Paul Wellstone of Minnesota was a vocal critic of the much more popular FIRST Gulf War. The first President Bush cursed him! Tammy Baldwin was elected as the nation's first openly gay, non-incumbent member of Congress, despite coming from a culturally conservative state. The book is rich in brave progressive people of all races, colors, genders and sexual preferences. And not all white men are stupid, as the book plainly shows!

I was given this book by organizers in the League of Young Voters. When I first saw the title, I knew the tone would be just right for my current temperament. We all have ideas that the world doesn't go just how we'd like, and we tend to think that we're such a small part of the equation that there's never any way that we can actually make a discernable difference in our communities. Then I read this book. "How to Get Stupid White Men..." tells of stories of other young people just like me, who decided they'd had enough of the SWM's rhetoric and needed a change in their communities. What was astonishing to me was that they actually made it happen. It's one of the most inspirational collection of words I've ever read. I've been walking around recommending it to everyone I know. Even some of the SWM's I work with. Hopefully enough people will read this book, and little by little, our country will be run by the people, for the people, just as our forefathers imagined.

As a cynical old curmudgeon who finds fault in fellow humans more often than praise, I am humbled and inspired by these creatively energized folks. Their success stories and positive attitudes remind me of a long-ago time-the sixties, when the organizing and action sometimes resulted in social change. Maybe this book won't change the November election, but it could. Even though this little primer in voter activism could have written by The League of Women Voters or included as a chapter in every United States high school government book, its message is now conveyed in a language and style that can connect with those who will determine the future of this country. The "can do" attitudes, organizing skill, and creativity recounted here are the key to waking up a tired, disillusioned, and disheartened electorate. These ideas turned into action can prove that democracy works.
