Jazz never smelled so good...,
By DJ_Nihilism (The Dirty South) - See all my reviews
This review is from: Style Drift (Audio CD)
The second full length LP from the Portland, OR band is like it's predecessors; a unique mix of instrumental improvisation using guitars, keyboards and drums. When this was initially released in 2002, it was called many things: soft voiceless funk, space jazz, aesthetic fraggle rock. While the funk is still there, Style Drift definitely emphasizes jazz fusion. There is definitely more taut interplay between instruments and every track here is bubbly, slinky, pervasive, as if gliding across an abysmal celestial plain straight to yer brain. For fans of Plej, Couch, Can, Tortoise, Mushroom, Neu!, et al. Back in college I played the heck out of this record on my radio show. Never heard anything else from them after this record so if this was their legacy, it was a damn fine note to end on.

Getting wierder,
By Stargrazer "the lost mixtape of my life" (deep in the heart of Michigan) - See all my reviews (VINE VOICE)
This review is from: Style Drift (Audio CD)
Fontanelle continues to distance themselves from their more groove-oriented leanings, concentrating instead on textural interplay. Overall a spacier approach, less grounded than the s/t album or its follow-up "F.""Style Drift" is enjoyable from the standpoint that it's unconventional space-jazz, but there isn't much to grab onto in the way of obvious melody or rhythm. The lengthy title track, with it's handclaps and clavinet-like keyboards, comes closest to being memorable.
