Reads like a magazine,
By Bookworm (Atlanta, GA) - See all my reviews
This review is from: Style (Hardcover)
This book has a layout more like a magazine than a traditional book- each page has short paragraphs, quotes, lists and pretty watercolor illustrations. Kate Spade discusses different things that have influenced her own style- her favorite movies, fashion icons, artwork, music, etc. She also talks a little about her favorite colors and favorite color combinations. There is some info about accessorizing (imagine that!) and jewelry/clothing care. While this is a cute book, there is not much substance to the book. It was an entertaining one-time-read that can be finished in about 1 1/2 to 2 hours.

Cute book but needs more substance.,
By bookgirl (AR) - See all my reviews
This review is from: Style (Hardcover)
I bought this book expecting more fashion tips. There are several useless facts about how Kate finds style in everyday objects. The book was interesting even though it wasn't what I expected. If you really want a book about fashion and only fashion I would heed the words of other reviews. If you decide to get the book I recommend waiting for the paperback or buying a used version.

Ideas for Fashion and Style,
This review is from: Style (Hardcover)
This cute little book has many useful visual ideas and stylish prompts. Ideal for someone who has no sense of color or fashion. Though this book is a nice resource offering some clever ideas to those of us who have a sense of style. The sizing charts are also practical even though each designer tends to have a different perception of the dimensions of a size six figure.I enjoyed my first reading of the book and like the watercolor illustrations. Admittedly, I won't be referring to many of the pages again since I prefer to use this guide for outfit brainstorming. Mrs. Spade does try to get the message across to "Dress by your own rules." The whole thing reminds me of a book I had as a child titled, "I Spy" with drawings of various household objects and their words. Simple, but entertaining none-the-less. The simplicity of the book jacket is appealing and Kate Spade's attempt to be the Emily Post of fashion is admirable.

Whimsical and Fun,
By Zora Neale "Ruby" (Phoenix, AZ usa) - See all my reviews
This review is from: Style (Hardcover)
I bought Kate Spade's book on Style because I was in the mood. I find it to be charming and light- nothing to get serious over. The water color illustrations are pretty and reminds me of sunny days and daydreams. While I know what I like, it's nice to get fresh ideas from a true designer. She talks about color combinations and collecting items you enjoy. I think she means for fashion to be whimsical and fun- nothing to take too seriously! Some of these reviewers are completley missing the mark! I do not think Kate Spade is thinking about become a famous writer!

Waste of Money,
By "thelily" (New York, NY) - See all my reviews

I agree with the other reviewer. I bought all of the books in this series and am shocked at how much of the advice has been taken from previous authors on these topics. She is copying classics like Emily Post and simply re-wording the text. Except for the cute drawings, this series is a waste of money. If you want to know how to do things "correctly", read Letitia Baldridge's "The New Manners For the '90's". It covers everything and is written by a woman with the education and experience to know of which she speaks! Not someone who using her fashion connections to flood the magazines and talk shows with her "discovery" of this information.

Hello?? Is there any substance here?,
By A Customer
This review is from: Style (Hardcover)
I'm a fashion design student and bought this book hoping to glean some information from it, however, I found nothing worth my while in the entire book. This is basically an inventory of what Kate Spade thinks is great about her own wardrobe and doesn't tap into any longstanding style concepts. It strikes me as being very self-indulgent on her part. As if we all care what her favorite colors and shoes are. Beyond tittering on about her own wardrobe, she makes mention of a few style standards, but ones we already heard of a million times, like how great Audrey Hepburn's look is in Breakfast at Tiffany's. Don't waste your money on this one!!

I recieved this book as a gift, and enjoyed it very much. I am a High School Fashion student, and found it very helpful in deciding on colors, patterns, and shapes of the outfits I designed. I found it a fun read, with many good books, movies, and tips reccomended.

A Real Keepsake,
By
This review is from: Style (Hardcover)
I am a costume designer, ex-fashion editor and for those of you who don't know, Kate has a degree in journalism. Kate Spade was also an editor for a fashion mag and sold half of her company to the Neiman-Saks corp for 34 million dollars just seven years after she launched. This book IS about Kates own inspiration and personal favorites on the subject of color and style. It is not meant to be a step by step guide as much as it is her tid bids of cultual and artistic info to inspire. Outside of the beautiful watercolor images my favorite is how she lists her favorite stylish movies and favorite fine artists. Kate is a true designer, an artist, not a silly talk show TLC show host with no previous training in fashion or style. Her book is creative and feminine. These books are keepsakes.

Violet Mittens,
This review is from: Style (Hardcover)
I bought this little book on style as a gift but liked it so much that I kept it for myself. It's a virtual treasure trove of information on topics such as art, design, clothing, and color, and to add icing on the cake, it's filled with unique watercolor illustrations. In fact, the drawings themselves are worth the price of the book, and when you add the nuggets of useful and fun information, it's a keeper. In her "stylish" way, Kate Spade tells the reader that basics are always best, that pearls are still in, and that red is an unafraid color whose strength she adores. She's a fan of accessories and the creativity they allow but reminds the reader of the importance of balance and restraint. I especially enjoyed reading about wardrobe ABCs and added some new words to my vocabulary (balaclava, bateau, and monokini). Spade even tells how to spot the perfectly made umbrella! Do you know what a pangram is? I do...but I didn't until I read this pretty primer on style. Buy the book; I guarantee that you'll be both enlightened and entertained. |
