5.0 out of 5 stars I really like this!
I love this book because it's not about following trends or fads, it's about finding what works for you. Too often the fashion industry becomes too concerned with tall & skinny people like they are the only ones who wear clothes. This guide covers just about all types of garments & body types. I was lucky to get it at a used book store for five dollars & I've been using...

I am an attractive woman but have an awful time trying to put together a wardrobe that I'm happy with! Looking for guidance, I checked out this book as well as the Lucky Style Manual. The Lucky book I looked at firsthand at Border's and found it to be very cleanly laid out, useful, informative and inspiring - especially the part about the closet purge and four simple questions to ask about those items you're holding on to. Profiles in the book are about designers (some pretty eclectic) with some interesting tips and styles, highly individualized. I checked out In Style's book from the library, and am glad I didn't spend the money. Maybe because I'm not a celebrity freak and don't really read in style magazine, I was intimidated by their use of celebrities wearing multi thousand dollar fashions (some of which I didn't even care for) to illustrate their fashion guidelines. I found that the book tended to repeat the obvious and erred on the side of being boring. I didn't find the inspiration or practical help I was looking for. The Lucky manual is a keeper; one that I came back to purchase on Amazon, and it's a useful reference book and indeed helping me put things together.

Did you ever wish you knew why some women always look so, "together?" What's their secret? This book is a great help to discovering what kinds of clothes look best on you and how to buy and care for clothes that will make you look terrific. I didn't find the entire book helpful, but I think the tips I did get out of the book have helped me dress in a more flattering manner.

2.0 out of 5 stars Not really a "style" book, September 29, 2006
This review is from: In Style: Secrets of Style: The Complete Guide to Dressing Your Best Every Day (Paperback)
This book is good for explaining which shapes of clothes look good on which figures, how clothes should fit, and how to tie a scarf. While that is helpful, I was expecting to learn some "secrets of style" as the title claims. Some tips on finding a style that corresponds with your personality or lifestyle, how to make it your own, shop for it, and keep it updated...that's what I thought I was buying. Too bad.

5.0 out of 5 stars Great Reference Book!, March 21, 2007

I have purchased other style books in the past, but this is one of the most useful because it breaks down body types and what looks best. My goal was the dress sexier and more feminine and this books has taught me what types of tops and bottoms to achieve that look. Now that I stick to the rules of thumb they provided, I am more comfortable with wearing whatever I pull out of my closet because I know it will fit great and be stylish.

5.0 out of 5 stars Superb Expression of Ideal Clothing, January 22, 2006

This review is from: In Style: Secrets of Style: The Complete Guide to Dressing Your Best Every Day (Paperback)
What I loved about this book was its superb and very well illustrated outline of what makes a piece of clothing ideal in terms of fit and cut. By drawing my attention to certain areas of fit that I was not considering, this book inspired me to get rid of many pieces of clothing which were nice but did not fit me properly and therefore did not flatter me. That made a HUGE difference in how I felt about my clothes!
I also found it very helpful to see the photographs of Hollywood stars in all kinds of outfits. I just love to see how well they know how to pamper and flatter themselves in their looks! When I look at someone who looks that good, I feel so uplifted about what is possible for me, and I enjoy that feeling very much.
This book has already inspired me to many wardrobe changes, and I know that the process of transformation is just starting for me. I look forward to many more gorgeous outfits that feel so great to me!

This is much better book than the second In Style book. There are detailed tips on how to look for the best fit and what shapes flatter which body style. I was hoping to see more pictures of actual clothes so that's the reason for four stars.

4.0 out of 5 stars Good Guide, August 1, 2005
This review is from: In Style: Secrets of Style: The Complete Guide to Dressing Your Best Every Day (Paperback)
I found this book very informative. Good information, especially on fits flattering for each body type. Although some of it is conflicting, such as was sometimes the case for my different body characteristics, overall I think that this book is quite useful. In the cases of conflicts, women should just decide which is their most dominant feature that they would like to deal with and follow the advice for that feature. Also had good information on building a group of basics which you can work from.

3.0 out of 5 stars i just finishing reading the book, good points but not enough, July 17, 2010

i like this book bcuz has the don'ts of clothing by shape, it helped me allot since i am a petite woman, however it lefttt sooo muchhhh out of the picture, was more like the title was soo wronngggg, the should rename it to : what it suits u best "the Do & the Don'ts" i tought i 'll find a quiz asking my activities or what i like to define My style!!!! or at least pictures of wannabe style: like ppl who borrow style from Jackie O, Portman, Princess Grace Kelly, Letizia Ortiz, Princess Rania, Etc, like really a book to help u research u'r personal unique style And put it to work for u. but still ok to buy I guess, but not creative mind blowing,... Sorry, this is more like do's and don't list.

Half-way through this manual so far. I like it, but I have a few complaints. 1. There aren't nearly enough pictures. Lots of words to describe parts of garments and the body, but it would be nice to have a visual reference. Fashion is the kind of thing that is so much easier to show/teach/learn through pictures. 2. Some of the language assumes the reader knows more than she/he does. There will be technical terms without any explanation of what they mean. This doesn't happen often, but it's quite annoying when it does. I know a lot about fashion, but I don't have the formal training to understand technical language. For someone learning about clothes (presumably the person who is buying "secrets of style;" if she knew the secrets, she probably wouldn't be buying this book), it would be helpful to explain everything. 3. Not enough examples. Basically, there is a lot of rhetoric--quotes from famous designers, explanations of what "color" means (duh?) pieces of fashion history, a few suggestions about what to buy for particular body shape, etc--but not a lot of really constructive info for each section. Again, more pictures would help. But the problem is that by the end of each section, I feel like I learned a few terms, a few ideas about how to tailor a garment, and VERY general fashion guidelines for my body shape, but I still don't really know what to buy.
