This review is from: Style Is Not a Size (Paperback)
Marano has developed a wonderful resource for women struggling to fit in to a culture that just doesn't seem to have room for them. The book addresses both the frustration of not being able to live up to the airbrushed, coiffured, taped, painted women of the magazines, and how to build a wardrobe that actually works and doesn't cost seventy thousand dollars.
The first half of the book focuses on the business of beauty - photo-retouched magazines, six foot tall petite models, white backdrops, breast taping - what you see definitely isn't what you get.
The second half of the book deals with the concept of style versus fashion, and how to select clothes that flatter your body type. She starts from bras and underwear and moves out from there. There are also several chapters dedicated to developing a capsule wardrobe of six or seven items that can resolve any 'I have nothing to wear' woes.
The tone of the book is light and fun without being degrading. When it went out of print, I photocopied half of it from the library until I found my own through Amazon used. If you can track it down, and you've ever felt as if looking good is a hopeless venture because you don't know where to start, giuve this a twirl. It's nice because it talks about beauty issues for all women, not ust 'fat' or 'thin' or 'tall' or 'short' or [insert skintone/race/ethnicity].
'One size' fits none, but this book fits everyone, regardless of height, weight or background. A great read. 5/5
