It is dark, almost black in fact when you look at it directly in a spoon, until you roll it around, that is, and then you see, the dark, dark green. The nutty, warm aroma of pumpkin seed envelops your nose, and your first response is to taste it quickly. Smooth and buttery on the tongue, a dark richness quickly opens to a bright pumpkin seed flavor and an oh so light note of spice on the finish.
There has been a mill on the Raab River in the town of Fehring, in Austria's region of Styria at least since the 12th Century. Predominantly a grain mill, since 1845 the mill has been owned by the Berghofer family and hence it has been known as the Mühle Berghofer and for as long as anyone can remember it has been producing some of the finest pumpkin seed oil in Styria. For nearly 100 years have they have been specializing in the pressing of delicious, high-quality, pure Steiri Kuerbiskernoel.
Over the generations the family has passed down the skill of producing oil from the little Styrian pumpkin. The dark green pumpkin seeds are harvested in the autumn from yellow-green Styrian pumpkin and they are the raw material for this delicious oil.
It is rich in unsaturated fatty acids, minerals and vitamins. It is suitable outstanding for the preparation of most diverse salads - particularly with apple cider vinegar.
