4.0 out of 5 stars Take Me To The Stew.
Like Cherry's previous works "Desireless" (1998) and "Present/Future" (2001), "Sub Rosa" is a mixed bag. It has potential hit singles with "Skull Tattoo", "Don't Give Up", "Up To You", "How Come" and "Twisted Games", but it also has a large helping of average music--the rest of the album. This isn't to say that Cherry has lost anything from his debut, but only to suggest...

3.0 out of 5 stars He hasn't grown.
Well, it looks like Eagle Eye Cherry is not planning on releasing his newest album in the US. Fortunately, if you go to [...] you can listen to real audio files of the new album. But, before you run off, don't expect much. Where "Desireless" gave us the jazz, fusion, pop melodies of Eagle Eye Cherry, his last two efforts have been relatively flat. Just like on "Present...

But, before you run off, don't expect much. Where "Desireless" gave us the jazz, fusion, pop melodies of Eagle Eye Cherry, his last two efforts have been relatively flat. Just like on "Present Future", there are some catchy tunes, but nothing groundbreaking. And it looks as if "Desireless" was a big hoax. An unrequited promise of what might have been. We at least have to wait another album to see, but with this latest release, it does not look like he may ever get there.

It has potential hit singles with "Skull Tattoo", "Don't Give Up", "Up To You", "How Come" and "Twisted Games", but it also has a large helping of average music--the rest of the album. This isn't to say that Cherry has lost anything from his debut, but only to suggest that he has difficulty differentiating one song from another. He still has room to grow as an artist, and, shamefully, the American record companies have shafted him (this album and his last one were released overseas first). If you liked his first two cds, there's a good chance you'll like "Sub Rosa" too. Pleasant and consistent, Cherry knows how to fuse modern rock, blues and r&b together like Sheryl Crow and Lenny Kravitz. He could stand to expand his musical palette, however, and what's interesting is that he utilized several different producers for "Sub Rosa", but the end result suggests that they did not have much influence over his musical vision. It will be interesting to see if Eagle Eye plays it safe or tries to experiment more like his sister, Neneh (when is she ever going to release a new cd???)

As an Eagle Eye Cherry fan, I found this CD delightful. I think it is his best yet, and it has left me wanting to hear more from him. A couple of the songs I have heard on his other CD but it is still very enjoyable.

4.0 out of 5 stars Sub Rosa ~ Eagle-Eye Cherry, September 18, 2005

Sub Rosa~ Eagle-Eye Cherry being the brother of Neneh Cherry (spelling?!) is a very good rock album with simple yet effective lyrics and vocals that work quite well. His dress is quite ok but it looks a bit like H&M and that is not a good idea since H&M means bland and uninspired. I like the cover photo but he would look even better if he combed his hair and wore a tie. The book-let is quite well done and photographs serve their purpose but the font is atrocious and that is a big minus. Even so this album gets 4 out of 5 stars and it is definetely not an album to be missed.
