Long forgotten post-punkers, December 9, 2004
This review is from: Sub-Stance (Audio CD)
Rising from the ashes of Guns For Hire, a fictitious band that caused something of a commotion in the UK in the late 1970's, Department S can best be described as post-punk mods. Fronted by vocalist Vaughn Toulouse (R.I.P), Department S recorded a few singles in the early 80's, including "Is Vic There?" (the most popular, it topped out at #22 in the British charts in 1980), "Going Left Right", and "I Want". Signed to Stiff Records, they recorded an LP's worth of material that Stiff ultimately refused to release. Their limited catalog was re-released by Mau Mau Records in 1993, but this collection combines the unreleased LP with several live tracks and b-sides.
