4.0 out of 5 stars without a doubt, the hardest Genesis game I have
Subterrania is different from any other game in many ways. First, the main challenge in the game is fighting gravity along with all the bosses, and the missions you have to complete. And you have to rescue so many people in each level and find a Sub-Module that's hidden somewhere in the level. After doing all that, you complete the level by getting back to your base...

Subterrania is different from any other game in many ways. First, the main challenge in the game is fighting gravity along with all the bosses, and the missions you have to complete. And you have to rescue so many people in each level and find a Sub-Module that's hidden somewhere in the level. After doing all that, you complete the level by getting back to your base safely. Subterrania had great graphics for the time, and also great sound. It's also fun once you get the hang of it. But, it is a real hard game. I can beat most of my Sega games, but I haven't ever been able to get past Mission 8 on this game. It's so challenging because you have to keep your ship fueled up, and you can die real quick even by just scraping a wall for a few seconds.

If you like good, sci-fi games that have a good challenge to them, this could be a game that you might enjoy. Even if you're not a video game expert or you don't like games that have complicated missions, you might enjoy Subterrania. Overall, I'd recommend it if you want a different kind of game with a great challenge.

5.0 out of 5 stars A game with a great challenge, October 7, 2000

"Subterrania" isn't like any other video game ever made, and in a good way. You control a spaceship that is bound by gravity, it will slowly fall to the ground if you don't keep flying. There are several levels and you have an objective in each. In all the levels, you have to find a certain number people who are waiting to be rescued, a Sub-Module, and complete a certain objective which can range from picking up reflectors in order to reflect laser shots back at your enemies in order to destroy them and break through a barrier, to just finding an awesome-looking boss and defeating him. All the while, while you're completing your mission, you have to keep your ship fueled up, and then get back to your base and land the ship on it once you finish your mission. You can find certain items in the games such as different weapons, missiles, extra lives, etc.

"Subterrania" had some great graphics for the time it was made, the sound effects and music are done well, the control might take some getting used to at first, but it's not bad in any means, and the game can be a lot of fun. Just one warning, some people might hate this game because it can be unbelievably hard in certain levels. Make sure you read your objective so you'll know exactly what you have to do in each level or you will get lost real quick.

I recommend anybody who has a Sega Genesis to at least rent this game. It's an underrated game for the system.

4.0 out of 5 stars Probably still the most difficult game I've ever played., November 20, 2009
= Fun:5.0 out of 5 stars
This review is from: Sub Terrania (Video Game)
And for the right reasons. The controls were superb (and still are very intuitive), the response to the controls was excellent. It also acknowledged turbofire and all of the goodies, as well as had mapable controls which is probably the first game I can consciously remember having played.

Gravity, is and isn't your friend. Gravity actually happens in this game and as you go farther into the asteroid the more gravity pulls your ship down the screen. Early on it's almost negligible, alot of coasting will slowly get you down around the asteroid. Later on, it becomes fast sucking your ship down into the rocks to where it feels as if you are fighting it almost constantly. It's great for saving fuel when you want to go down in the stage, but man it burns it up as you fly upwards. The stages are well composed and the graphics are still decent if not a little dated. Subterrainia is what I cut my Genesis teeth on, I never beat it but man I could rack up a score.

Out of all of my Genesis games it's the most difficult, and as one of my games that I've owned throughout several consoles it is probably still the most challenging. I keep hoping to see this one pop up in a Sega Collection but so far it regretfully hasn't. It's difficult, really difficult but fun. You aren't running around gimped like in a lot of supposedly challenging games (read Ninja Gaiden and DMC3 in particular) instead the stages are what makes the game a challenge. Which is something many a modern gamer doesn't understand, is the challenge. Too many games are made on Easy Mode (even when the difficulty is Jacked to something like "insane") these days and I think honestly gaming is hurt in quite a few ways because of this. One of the nice things about this game is it starts off easy enough, (levels 1-5 aren't bad) and gradually gets more and more challenging. As you delve deeper into the rock, the environments get more and more unique looking as well.

This game illustrates perfectly, how proper stage design can make a game a challenge to beat and master.

One of my favorite stages ever is still the first few water stages, where the water is acidic and corroding away your shields. Gravity is extremely strong sucking your ship straight down to the depths of splatter city. The enemies are creatively designed for the most part and can be a challenging but not too difficult (that's what the stage itself is for), and it's an overall very intriguing twist on the flying shootem up. Your mission is to rescue the trapped miners and combat the alien threats. You get a briefing before each mission, and find upgrades as you fly about. There are various devices in the stage which can help you as well, such as laser deflection dishes, drills, rails etc.

If you get the chance to pick up the title I recommend it heartily. I didn't expect a game from my childhood to endure as well as it has, but it has. It's probably more challenging than the last game you played, but by that same token you'll find yourself having alot of fun too.
