Excellent read and gives a clear understanding of endurance training. The book is perfect for anyone trying to get leaner, fitter and faster. Its a slow and gradual process to follow and training on heart rate is the way to go. I highly recommend all to buy Phil's books of " Endurance Training and Racing". After running numerous marathons and doing two ironman races, i realised my training was more focused on intervals and tempos and doing the long runs relatively hard. Now i have switched to running slow which has resulted in running faster at a lower heart rate. No injuries and body has become lean. Follow Phil's clean diet and it works, Hope this helps.

Whether or not your goal (hope or dream!) is to run a 1:59 marathon, there is much in this book that is valuable to any distance runner. The information about the Lydiard method of training is essential, and arguably the most well-known, but the chapters on nutrition, feet and the brain provide much information that is both surprising and valuable. At the end of the book, just in case you want to see your competition, the authors provide a list of the most promising candidates to run 4:35/mile pace for 26.2 miles!

This book is a focused version of his previous work. It's a light and interesting read. Would be interesting to see Maffetone studying Kilian Jornet and other trail/ultra elites the way he approached the Kenyan runners in this book.

"1:59" contains pretty much the same information as "The Big Book of Endurance Training and Racing", but put in a different light, that of marathon running. Therefore, Dr Maffetone reveals more specific training tips than in his other books. Anyway, "1:59" is an easy read and an excellent refresher of Dr Maffetone's insights in endurance training and racing.

I have followed the author since 1989 a-la Hawaii Ironman and Mark Allen. Entertaining reading. Some novel ideas tucked away in there which spur the imagination. We just need to get the 1:59 candidates to wear HR monitors for the next 5 years.

I had been hearing a lot about the great results from HR training and upon researching found out about Dr Maffetone, his method, successes and new book. Not only does it show what it will take for an elite runner to breat the 2 hour barrier but it offers insight for the average runner to get faster and remain injury free all while running slower.

At first it was a slow slog but in the month since I have incorperated HR training I am beginning to see the gains. Also since I am not stressing my body and paying better attention to rest, recovery and diet as prescribed by Dr Maffetone, I am not fatigued and have been able to log more miles, focus more on breathing and form as well as have better contol over my weight.

I can't recommend this book enough for any runner, especially those who has seen a plateau in their training or been battling injury.

Phil Maffetone grabs every aspect of good running out of his basket of endurance racing wisdom. Not just one, two or a couple will make for a 1:59 marathon, but adding them all up should certainly get somebody there. Looking how many of these things even the best runners don't do right (let alone everybody else), assuming an improvement of less than 3 min for the current bests or 7, 8, 9 minutes for those that have not tapped into their potential at all, sounds very plausible. Let's hope we can witness that feat of human speed and endurance soon.
