5.0 out of 5 stars Music for the Revolution!, June 21, 2002

"Sub-verses" fuses the sounds of rock and indigenous music to create a powerful compilation of power anthems for Xicana/os.
If you're not familiar with the group, think Rage Against the Machine with less grating vocals, stronger lyrics, and mixed with indigenous music (wooden flutes, hand-percussion drums, etc).
My personal favorites are Preachers of the Blind State, Nauhi Ollik and War Flowers (The first song is rock, the other two are less rock and more slow, indio music with spoken vocals).
The CD is solid and each song has its own message. I recommend it highly. For those who have already heard of the group, check out Sociedad=Suciedade. It has A.U. and other artists including the Mexica reggae group Quinto Sol.

5.0 out of 5 stars IN DEFENCE OF THE EARTH AND THE SUN, April 10, 2001
This review is from: Sub-Verses (Audio CD)
I've owned this album for a while now and I cannot say enough about it. This entire album makes you think on another album and it describes the world from the revolutionary perspective, highlighting racism and injustice. It delivers a serious message with great rock music to accompany it. The albulm itself is a pledge against oppression. Every one of the tracks is aligned with one of the demands of the EZLN on the back cover.

The album opens and closes with music and instruments indiginous to the "Americas." This gives the package the feel of a modern day Mexika ceremony. Although Aztlan Underground obviously represent the Chicano community, their music can be listened to in comfort by anyone who loves listening to meaningful music (especially rock and rap), complete with complex lyrics deep with meaning.

"No Soy Animal" is a great testament against police brutality, uniquely told from both the perspective of the injust law-enforcer and the victim. "Lemon Pledge" is a song which outlines the ironies of the pledge of alegience to the flag of the USA. It ends with actual radio excerpts from Riverside, CA in which callers blatantly degrade the value of life of Mexican Imigrants saying they don't deserve to live and comparing them to animals.

There are plenty of songs on this album which will keep anyone listening for more. This is clearly Aztlan Underground's best album to date. I highly recomend this album to any true rock fan, chicano warrior, or anyone involved in the struggle.

-Peace.

4.0 out of 5 stars Ready For Revolution, January 9, 2001
This review is from: Sub-Verses (Audio CD)
Proudly serving the lyrical needs of the Chicano community are the members of Aztlan Unerground. Their lyrics are inspired by the "Xicano" experience, and they deliver well in their songs. The music on this CD is a great accomplishment by a great Rock Band of the Chicano era. The implementation of indigenous instruments surprisingly compliments the music on this album. This CD is a must for any Chicano music collection!

5.0 out of 5 stars Powerfull Music, September 11, 2005

It's difficult to use words to describe how cool Aztlan Underground are. These people represent the Mexican people with amazingly powerfull music. Aztlan's sounds are a fusion of Rock, Hip-Hop, Latin and Aztec music and it works really really well. All of the tracks on the album are great, especially Lyrical Drive By, Revolution and Decolonize. If you can't get it on Amazon try searching on google or go on an Amazon site that isnt the United States one. This is one of my favourite bands. I'm so glad I was recommended it while in LA.
