A 5 Star 2CD set from Erick!,
By The God "houserat" (Syracuse, NY USA) - See all my reviews
This review is from: Subliminal Sessions 1 (Audio CD)
This is my second review for Erick Morillo and I'm proud to say he doesn't disappoint. With the exception of Roger Sanchez, Erick is the only other DJ that's received a 5 star rating for a double cd set. Erick displays a nice variety of house music styles in these two sets. All the things I like in house music are found here, thumping beats, deep bass, quality mixing and a great music selection. In all, you get over 145 minutes of jamming house music fun.CD 1 is the party stater cd with funky house, disco/vocal anthems and underground sounds. Coming in at over 73 minutes you get just the right amount of hits to get folks on the dancefloor. Cuts of choice are "Bringin' The Funk", "Night @ The Black", "Watcha Perrita" and "Release." The only cut on the first set I didn't care for was "Bel Amour." On it's own this would rate a 5 star set but because I'm rating it with another set that's just a little better this set receives 4.75 stars. CD 2 is the late night party set. When folks are already on the dancefloor and need good music to keep them there, this set get's the job done. The tone and feel of this 73+ minute set is underground (music you're not likely to hear on the radio). No vocal house here, just bangin' beats and tribal rhythms with some speed garage thrown in. I like my house music raw and this set is certainly raw, lacking the top 100 hits everyone has heard. Cuts of choice are "Moments", "Mr. Jingles", "Wack M.F." and "Harmonizer." This set has no weaknesses and every track is good. This set rates 5 stars. Erick Morillo, let me say that again... Erick Morillo! This guy is two for two in 5 star cds (I gave him 5 stars on the "House Nation" cd with Louie Vega). If you can get your hands on his work, you're likely to get a shining example of house music.

Funky Deep Tribe,

Morillo brings us another fantastic two disc set that brings you into the clubs that he recorded the discs in. I thought he had a great mix of deep, tribal and funky house, bringing it all together in a set that is second to none. MIXER gave this a 10 and it is well deserved because Morillo is the man. Hailing from Harry 'Choo Choo' Romero's label he brings together three stand out tracks by him, my favorite being "Suck My Clock". I'd never heard of him before, but Kid Creme's "Austin's Groove" blew me away and the flawless mix into the soon to be anthem "Bel Amour" was great. Then Morillo starts to bring us back into the deep tribal with X Press 2's "Muzik X Press" and culmintaing with "My Release" and "Suck My Clock". CD2 starts off with Sono's "Keep Control" whom i have had in my box for a couple weeks now, i just can't get enough of the vocals, the guy's voice is rockin. Then in the middle of disc 2 using classics like "Sputnik" and "Wackass M.F." and blending it in with Jaimy & Kenny D's great track is fantastic. My favorite track off the whole album (although they are all fresh and great) is Those 2's "Rock you, Rock you". This is a great outing by a master and i suggest anyone into house in general should pick this album, it is an essential house album.

Morillo is still da man,

I totally disagree with Lucie, if anyone's been to see Erick Morillo recently then they'll know what his sets are all about, he doesn't just play 'hands in the air' vocal house he mixes in darker more tribal sounds. He builds it up and then brings it back down...this cd is a true reflection of one of Morillo's sets, the mixing is impeccable and the tune selection is quality but then thats what i've come to expect from Morillo.

Possibly the best house DJ there is.,

With possibly his best cd mix ever. This cd lays down some serious energy while maintaining a cool sexy vibe and not resorting to the cheesiness that other house dj's resort to. Morillo always has a distinct sound in his mixes and this one is no exception, this is music for your body, mind and soul.

Pure House/Not That Techno House B.S.,

I don't know why I waited so long to write a review because this cd just makes you want to jack it up (Early House listener would understand this). It brings back that deep tribal house that I missed back in the days of the early house scene in NY. Yeah, I was there and still can't let the rhythm go (the lady tells me the cd is too young for me, believe that!!!). Favorite is "Release". When I played it I could not help but reminisce about the wee mornings at the Garage (Friday 12 mid to Sat 11 A.M.). No place in Cali quite like it. Well if you are looking for some deep tribal pure house then this is it. "What we need to do is go back. Back to the way we used to do it. Like at the Paradise Garage."

I'm not quite sure waht lucie is talking about when she says this isn't house because this is a great cd. Morillo has gotten away from the whole filter house sound and incorporated a good deal more driving, tribal qualities to his mix. This is a great taster for someone who wants to find out what subliminal is all about. My only gripe is sputnik by pete heller. I. for one, think that this track is overplayed. It also bears a close resemblance in the breakdown section of the song to wink's " so how's your evening so far"

How misinformed Lucie was, to have bought this cd in the first place, if she wanted "slamming underground house beats". This is "house" ...... in one of it's many forms - there is more than one!!. It seems Lucie's poor knowledge of music will, ultimately, cost her a lot of money!!. Funky vocal house sums up disc 1, 2 being a darker tribal set. Sheer class from start to finish - a cd you can play loud and imagine you are at Pacha, if like me, you can't always be there. I buy lot's of mix cd's and this one is staying near the player. nuff said.

first of all, if you are looking for slamming house beats, this is definitely not the cd you need...the music on this cd is more dancy-techno-funk....not house....very very disappointed and wish to god i could send it back...his previous work is definitely better...but my dear house fans, you will be almost certainly DISAPPOINTED...SO DONT BOTHER BUYING IT IF YOU ARE LOOKING FOR SLAMMING UNDERGROUND HOUSE BEATS....LUCIE
