Deep into the world of Subs, June 1, 2000
This review is from: Submarines (Brassey's Sea Power : Naval Vessels, Weapons Systems and Technology, Vol 7) (Paperback)
'Submarines' by Admiral Hervey is a fantastic introduction into the technical side of submarines. The only reason it does not get five stars is because it is too short. This has got to be THE text for non-submariners ( Government employees, special forces commanders, defence chiefs). It details the essentials not only of operating, but also building and supporting a force of submarines. This book is packed with fact and measured personal opinion and experience.
Probably too detailed for the average reader of submarine novels, this text does not concentrate solely upon the weapons and technical specifications, rather it focuses on how and why countries might use submarines effectively. This included the support required for the masts, propulsion and life support systems.
The writing style is brisk and too the point. Easy to read, and easily understood by non-nautical types.
Invaluable!
