It really grows on you!,
By A Customer
This review is from: Submodalities (Audio CD)
Hey! This is a really awesome CD that gets better every time you listen to it! Very different from their first album. If you're looking for something a little less pop and a little more rock, buy this CD! Here's how I rate the songs: Just Another Phase-I love the guitar! A good song! Bang Bang Boom- a good song but I'm sick of it already. California- An awesome some you can really rock to! Always in my Heart- a really sweet ballad that still actually uses drums Typical-I really like the lyrics and it has good guitars! Walking Behind- Has a good beat-I like the keyboards in this song! Anti-freeze and Aeroplanes- Has really good lyrics but the song is kinda boring. I don't want you to want me-Another good song to rock to! Life on Mars-kinda catchy but it gets boring Who Do You Love- I think this is a really good slow song--one of my favourites on the album Call the Doctor- A good bouncy pop song Spy- Probably the best song on the album!!! Hidden Tracks: Destiny- Very cool but it goes on for a little too long! The Sound Effects song (as I like to call it) Kinda weird but catchy! Overall, the best CD I've heard in a long time!

The ULTIMATE alterna-pop album!!,

It doesn't get any better than "Submodalities". Period. This is my absolute favorite CD, hands down. If you remember the Moffatts from their "Chapter 1" teen-pop days, be ready for a major surprise! The odd title of this album, according to the guys, means "a perceptible change in image", and no other title could be more appropriate. At the time they recorded this CD, Scott Moffatt was 18, and his three brothers were 17, but you never could have guessed by listening to this masterpiece. Their talent far outreaches their age. There isn't a single track on this disc that I ever skip over. The Moffatts' style is so remarkably diverse -- from the Oasis-flavored "Just Another Phase", to the Blink-182 caliber punk-pop of "California", to the trippy psychedelia of "Life On Mars", to the heartfelt power balladry of "Who Do You Love". And the awesome final track, "Spy", almost defies categorization ... Radiohead meets Queen, perhaps? And that's not even mentioning my personal favorites, "Typical" (reminiscent of something Stroke 9 or Matchbox Twenty might write), "Walking Behind" (which might be what you get if you toss a Train song and a Dave Matthews Band song into a blender and hit frappe), and "Bang Bang Boom" (probably the most commercial of the bunch, but still super-catchy)! Are you beginning to see that I simply can't say enough good things about this album?!? The only bad thing about this album is that it's finished playing long before you want it to be. The boys wrote 90% of the material, they played all the instruments themselves, and they all took part in lead vocal duties, giving an extra dimension of variety to your listening pleasure (and what a pleasure it is). It's a deplorable shame that this disc wasn't released in the United States ... if it had been, it would have gotten a phenomenal response. If you love true alt-rock music, I urge you to BUY THIS ALBUM! It will restore your faith that teenagers can create something other than sugary, commercialized, teenybopper pop. Trust me, folks ... do yourself a favor and hit "add to cart". You'll thank me later.

An Amazing CD!,

Ok, you know how sometimes, an artist will say that their next album will be more mature, and it never is? Well, that is the complete opposite for the Moffatts. Although their last album was a pop album, Submodalities is a genuine rock CD. Some of the songs, such as Bang Bang Boom and Typical have the commercial pop feel that we're used to, they also have a rock edge that makes the album well worth a listen.

The Moffatts have been absent from the UK's music industry for some time.Their last release "Misery" was in October 1999, and it didn't do well at all.I've ADORED them since 1998 and have been dying for this album to be released in the UK! I couldn't wait that long though so I bought it from Canada and I was so amazed when I played it. "Submodalities" -their new album has definitely brought a whole new look and sound to The Moffatts; they are no longer the pop rock/gentle sound they were before. This album has lots of different sounds and structures-with help from Bob Rock who produced this album. I totally love this album and can't stop playing it. I like it because each song is different and unique and Dave,Clint,Scott and Bob take it in turns to sing leads (although Clint and Bob only sing one lead each). Each track displays a lot of hard work and time getting the pieces for the song together. Each song blasts you away with quality music and pure talent. Just when you try to catch a breath, 2 hidden tracks boom out of your speakers showing a different sound once again. If you're thinking this album will be like Chapter I: A New Beginning (their last album) then you are totally wrong. If you compared Chapter I, with Submodalities you'd think each album was done by two different artists!! Submodalities is extremely different to Chapter I which was more poppy. The Moffatts said Chapter I was "more pop music than anything but that's what we liked at the time and Submodalities is to show the change and express our new sound."Submodalities actually means anything to do with a visual change of image. This album has "amped-up-guitars,lush Brit-rock textures and a sometimes soft sometimes squalling sonic adventurousness! This album will demolish any stereotypical or preconceptions you have had about The Moffatts and you'll look at them in a different light. Scott, Clint, Bob and Dave's voices blend so well together and so smoothly that it's something which can only be achieved by brothers. This CD should be in everyone's collection!! Forget what you've heard about them before, BUY THIS!! You won't be disapointed!! Its quality music by extremely talented guys. FORGET WHAT YOU'VE HEARD ABOUT THEM BEFORE~PLEASE GIVE THEM A CHANCE!

I was DEFINITELY not a Moffatts fan and was wasn't interested in them before I bought this cd because they were more of a pop group and I listen mostly to rock/alt. rock. But when I heard some of the songs that were going to be on their new album on the radio, I was amazed at the change! I then went out and bought the cd the day it came out and was totally blown away by it; I love this cd! Not only have their looks and image changed, their singing and song-writing style have changed also to more of a rock-style. It's an amazing CD and I definitely recommend ALL the songs on the album to everyone, my faves being: SPY (my ever-favorite; this song is amazing), Just Another Phase, I don't want u to want me, Antifreeze & Aeroplanes, and Walking Behind (but the rest of the songs are amazing also~)

When I heard the new Moffatts album was going to be more rock and roll, I didn't fully believe it. Based on their previous album (Chapter I) and all of their b-sides, I expecting another pop album. Man, was I wrong! It's obvious that they've grown up and matured. It's an excellent rock album, and when it finally hits the U.S. (and if it's marketed correctly), this will be big. I strongly recommend buying it!

A new fan,

I wasn't really a fan when this band first came out because I thought that they were going to be just like any other boy band, that usually doesn't write their own songs or play their own instruments. But this album (Submodalities) proved to me that I was wrong about them. From the second I heard the album, I couldn't stop listening to it. Their sound has matured so much and they have improved at playing their instruments, which, I think, totally shows in this amazing album. If you're a Moffatt fan, then you already know how great this album is, and if you're not, then you will be once you hear the great songs off Submodalities. I totally recommend this album to anyone who loves rock and great harmony mixed into 12 great songs, including 2 hidden tracks. I am a huge fan of two bands that used to be a lot alike in their sound of music, but are now different, Hanson and The Moffatts (can't live without them either). Hanson still have the pop sound with them, but they added more rock and soul, and The Moffatts have an edgier rock sound. I hope this review helps. Now go buy Submodalities!!!

Evolution...,
By Sarah (Canada) - See all my reviews

I (being an extreme teeny bopper at the time) bought this C.D the day it came out. I was surprised. It wasn't at all like their previous C.D (or C.Ds, rather). Clearly, the Moffatts had evolved. For obvious reasons, seeing as how so much changed when you're a teenager, including music. The vocals, lyrics, and instrument playing on this C.D far outshines that on Chapter 1. Everything is a bit more mature. And this C.D has a great mix. It's not like they went totally heavy metal to prove themselves the anti-boyband. They've got a couple of boybandish ballads on it in fact, but they're really good. It's for those who like pop, rock, alternative, soft rock, and oldies. It's as though they've combined all of these styles to form one amazing C.D. I miss them! I'm sure whatever other C.Ds they may have put out would've been as great as Submodalities.Anyways, this C.D, remains to this day 4 years later, one of my favorites.

Their best album by far. I own it and I love it - the first one I had got so worn out (literally) that I had to get a new one. And believe me, it is worth every penny. If you haven't gotten this yet- DO IT! What are you waiting for? The rock sound mixed with a new twist on pop lyrics are a must for everyone.
