this CD is the essential grunge-record..it simply rocks! I bought the CD because i am a fan of blood circus, swallow and chemistry set, and these artists has some of the best tracks on the whole album. but the other artists surprised me too. "sex god missy" by tad is one of my favorite tracks by tad, and a good way to start this album. the fluid song is even better, and maybe one of the best songs on here. soundgarden and green river(later pearl jam) where maybe along with nirvana the most important grunge bands in the 80's, and all three bands are(of course) represented here. "big cigar" by catbutt has a garage-punky fee l to it, and it's also one of by favorites. buy this one if you like grunge, but if you think this is a f***ing creed-nickelback-puddle of mudd thing, don't..

A great compilation that gives the listener a chance to return to the glory days of late '80's/early 90's Seattle. Many of the bands here I had never heard of - much less heard - but was pleasantly surprised by the discs' overall quality.

If you're a fan of Nirvana, Mudhoney, Melvins, Screaming Trees, Beat Happening, etc, you'll enjoy this set, re-issued in an attractive mini faux leather box with a cool booklet. Photos by Seattle scenester Charles Peterson. Excellent; should never have been out-of-print.

I recently REcovered this CD. It's an excellent compilation of some of Sub Pop's early artists. If you're looking to see where it all started, or you just want a solid grunge CD, this is it. Don't loan it to anyone...

This CD is a must for any Seattle grunge fan that almost died with Cobain. It features indie label Sub Pop's greatest bands from early versions of Nirvana and Soundgarden to the best of Mark Arm in Green River and Mudhoney. It also includes a twist by being the first rock compilation to include a poem as one of the songs. If you loved the grunge era of just a few years ago you'll definitly love this album. Amen.

Hmm, like I care... how can you argue with Mudhoney's cover of "The Rose"?!?!?!?!? Honestly people...... and the Stephen Jesse Bernstein track.... what hilarity!!!! "Split," by the Days and Nights.... this stuff kept me company through my turbulent high school years... how can I forget it? I'm sure it's pure nostalgia, but it's a great portrait of a time and place. The book "Loser" about this same Seattle scene is pretty good, too.

I vaguely remember seeing this Subpop sampler CD a lot - for awhile after it's release. These twenty songs are from bands that were just breaking ground on the Seattle music scene from 1986-1988. One cut each from established artists such as Tad, Nirvana, Mudhoney, Soundgarden (in my humble opinion, one of the top ten best hard American rock bands - period), Beat Happening and the Screaming Trees. Then there are also a few names that I've never remotely even heard of - like Green River, Blood Circus and Days And Nights. Might be good to put in your car stereo when you make a late night run. Very nice collection.

This record is alright. I skipped some of the tracks, while others I played over and over until i could stand them no more and then played them one more time. Some of the highlights are Spank Through, The Rose and a few others I can't remember while the absolute best songs on the album are Green river's Hangin Tree and the Fastbacks' cover of Green River's Swallow My Pride. It's a good album to have around if you're a fan of Sub Pop.
