5.0 out of 5 stars Informative but not sterile!, June 19, 2009
This review is from: Substance Abuse In Adolescents And Young Adults: A Guide To Treatment (Hardcover)
When I began working as a substance abuse counselor in a school-based program, I had purchased this book with the hope that it would provide some insight into the adolescent addict's mind. When I began reading it, I enjoyed the author's anecdotes about his former clients but had a hard time breaking down some of the information offered in the first chapter (it consists of a lot of dated statistical information). However, after I'd been in the field for almost a year, I picked it back up. And I couldn't set it down. The information I couldn't get past because it was so dated (the book was written in the 90s) still ended up being very applicable and relevant, a fact of which I was not aware until I'd had some experience in the substance abuse field. This is the most engaging, eloquent and informative piece on substance abuse treatment in this age group I can honestly say I've ever read. My copy is full of highlighted passages and I refer to it daily. It has significantly improved my methods of assessment, treatment planning, group goals and processes and therefore my outcomes. It is extremely informative, but not sterile. The author does an excellent job of organizing material, explaining ideas clearly and relating them to his own cases, which makes reading this book an all-around rewarding experience.
