3.0 out of 5 stars Not one of her best but not bad......
I really like Susan Mallory's stories but this is not one of my favorites. I felt the storyline was a little bland but I did like Ryan and Julie together, they had really good chemistry. If your looking for a quick romance and an easy read, than this is a decent choice. I do have to say that I've read the 2nd in the series and it gets better!

Ryan Bennett thought that he was doing his cousin Todd, a favor, saving him from a blind date with woman who was obviously a gold digger by pretending to be Todd. Both Todd and Ryan had been the target of scheming woman before, so he's stunned when he arrives and meets Julie Nelson, a woman who quickly captivates him. Before he knows it heat explodes between them, leading to a spontaneous night of passion. Only when the morning comes, he is forced to explain the deception of why he pretends to be his cousin. Needless to say Julie shows him the door and refuses to have anything else to do with him. Except neither of them expected Juile to become pregnant. Now Ryan has a second chance, can he convince Julie he's not the total cad she thinks he is?

The Substitute Millionaire is yet another book by Susan Mallery that will be heading for my keeper shelf to be read again and again. I fell in love with Ryan right along with Julie. Julie's sisters and Ryan's cousin Todd round out an already suburb story leaving me wondering whose story would be next! Fans of Susan Mallery will find this a must read and readers who haven't had the pleasure of reading Ms. Mallery's work before, will find The Substitute Millionaire a delightful treat!

5.0 out of 5 stars You're not Todd?, November 5, 2006
This review is from: The Substitute Millionaire (Silhouette Desire) (Mass Market Paperback)
Boy has Ryan Bennett made a big blunder this time! He pretended to be his cousin Todd Austin III on a blind date--he was going to show this Julie Nelson a lesson. He & Todd thought she was after the $1,000,000 and catching a guy with lots of money too. Todd's aunt by marriage wants him to be married and she had just found her granddaughters and just knew one of them would be able to catch him and her reward money too.

Ryan, also a nephew by marriage, has dinner and an overnight stay with Julie, he had such a good time with her, before he tells her who he is. Knowing he should have told her before staying with her but not wanting to end a great time--he really likes her! He's embarrassed and can't stop thinking of her and how he can see her again.

Julie, an attorney, doesn't go on blind dates but she weakened trying to get closer to her grandmother. She's devastated after finding out Ryan had lied to her which is about the worst thing he can do.

Within a couple of weeks Julie realizes she's pregnant. She goes to Todd & Ryan's office to inform Ryan who by now really can't get her out of his head tries to talk to her but she wants nothing to do with him.

We get to watch Ryan try for friendship with Julie. She goes for the "get to know you" stage after the fact she feels. In one of the conversations she tells Ryan "he has good swimmers" and they have a good laugh together over the comment while both are looking forward to the baby.

Fun book, wonderful characters with lots of humor. I'm looking forward to Julie's sisters books. Willow's is 12/06 THE UNEXPECTED NILLIONAIRE and Marina's THE ULTIMATE MILLIONAIRE is a January '07 release.

5.0 out of 5 stars A very passionate and sizzling read!, November 6, 2006

Marilyn Shoemaker (Seattle, Washington) - See all my reviews
This review is from: The Substitute Millionaire (Silhouette Desire) (Mass Market Paperback)
This is the first book in the series THE MILLION DOLLAR CATCH and just plain fabulous. It's Ryan and Julie's story and a fun, passionate and very powerful read.

Julie is the oldest of three sisters and has problems trusting men. Her father comes and goes as he pleases which hurts her entire family, her one-time fiance was actually a married man and now her newfound Grandmother wants her to go on a blind date with her eldest millionaire nephew. The offering is $1,000,000 should they marry. However, Julie just wants to humor her Grandmother Ruth since they've just met so she agrees to go on the date.

Ryan, strong, handsome, smart hears from his cousin Todd that their Great Aunt Ruth wants Todd to go on a blind date. Ryan has just been hurt by a recent relationship and tells Todd he'll go in his place and teach the money grabbing woman a lesson. Ryan poses as Todd but doesn't count on Julie being so beautiful, charming, smart and witty. Their evening begins with sizzling attraction and ends in passion However, not so the next morning when Ryan reveals who he truly is and Julie throws Ryan out on his ear.

Fate, destiny? Call it whatever you want but Julie finds out she is pregnant with Ryan's child and this takes the reader on a rollercoaster journey one to be remembered for a long time.

I honestly can say I can't wait for the next book in the series as these rich and powerful men are going to have their hands full with the two remaining sisters....Willow and Marina.

Susan Mallery has again written an incredible series and this one being full of passion, humor, and sensitivity.

4.0 out of 5 stars Great for an afternoon at the beach!, October 6, 2011
When your grandmother shows up after more than twenty years of silence you tend to listen. When you find that the purpose of her visit is to set either you or your sisters up on a date with her nephew (a non-biological relation) you begin to quirk your head. But when she offers a million dollars if one of you marries him, well, you just have to go to see why.

Julie can't believe she lost rock paper scissors, again. Well, actually, maybe she should just stop choosing scissors. Why on earth is she actually going through with this! But wait, Todd seems absolutely perfect.... Maybe a bit too perfect. There must be a reason for the million.

Todd on the other hand can't believe his luck! Who would have thought that a woman who was offered a million dollars to go out with him wouldn't be a money grubbing witch? Hmmm, maybe he should tell her he's not really Todd.

2.0 out of 5 stars NOT REALLY A ROMANCE NOVEL---, June 28, 2010
This review is from: The Substitute Millionaire (Silhouette Desire) (Mass Market Paperback)
Just a long-winded overkill on dysfunctional families. Had a few interesting moments, but not enough to justify the time wasted.

I loved, loved, LOVED this heroine. Smart, funny, career-minded and she didn't take crap from anyone, including the hero. She was the polar opposite of the usual bland, pushover heroines in these books. Highly recommended!

this is a really qiuck read book. a couple or three hours and you're done. that said, you should not expect great literature, but to be entertained. i thought the relationship between julie and ryan was nicely done, but i never really warmed up to to todd ashton III., or the grandmother ruth. the book moved nicely and i enjoyed the journey from 1st very funny date to the happy ending.

5.0 out of 5 stars Very very good writer, January 9, 2007

This review is from: The Substitute Millionaire (Silhouette Desire) (Mass Market Paperback)
Amazing story. It doesn't matter if you read a book and the plot can or can't be true. What's important is that you can be bias or not to the main character, and when that occur, when you hate everything that anyone do to that character, the writer has you you liked or not. And that's why this book deserves SIX stars.
